Camcorders in 2024

As a canon owner the 605 seems appealing. To me on paper it is the fist affordable camcorder with..

-widish lens (wider than canon r6 with 24-105 and stab) (wide standard was set by 4.5eng lenses0
-OK af

The sony I played with (dont know the model) had better af and a less wide lens.

To me a camcorder will be used in confined spaces so that wide lens is critical

An r7 with 18-200 or sony equivilent might be worth a consider especially for a b (no sound) cam
an osmo or gopro might be worth a consider for a wide lock off!
I like the reound ND filters for osmo.

I was reading the reviews of the Sony Z190 1" chip camera on B&H and they were shockingly negative. Maybe Sony will feel compelled to make this model right at NAB this year?

Because the IQ is shocking when you come from a mirrorless or even your phone, lol.

Some of those people are probably just confused, like WTH is this? (thinking why this image quality looks like this)

I think the camcorders will improve...if they can make something like the 1" Sony ZV-1 II (f/1.8 @ 18mm end) look pretty darn decent with almost all of the same features a camcorder has, they gotta fix those camcorders and for something's sake make the lenses faster on the cameras.

Ramping is fine, expected, but f/1.8-2.8, that's it, it's 2024, fix it.

it, it's 2024, fix it.

Modern times have not made light bend different from Isaac Newton era.

Sure coatings, electronic defish and other things will bring marginal gains.

But overall lens gains will minimal in the camcorder space which unlike dslr has not been fighting a flapping mirror for the last half century?

Isaac Newton's old and out of touch.

Need Z280 lenses on larger chips, more 1" point-and-shoot lenses, more of the dozens of f/2.8 mirrorless zoom lenses mounted/adapted to some type of camcorder box. (If the design has to change a little, so be it.)

Is it often forgotten the relationship between chip size and max iris for a given front element size.

So 1/3 in camcorders maybe 1.8 while 1in camcorders are 2.8 with the same size and mass of glass???

(im sure my maths is a bit wonk)

S35 18-200 is often 6.3

So mainly a lens weighing 700g will give..
not wide enough
just about affordable
quite long
not really good in the dark

Irrelevant of chip size.

If you want..
wide enough, decent reach
good in the dark
you move into CN17 or 2/3 4.7 zooms.. that are BMW money.
Even though these lenses are for different chip sizes.

I mentioned an r7 above becuase you can use it with one of these not quite good enough zooms and turn it into a nearly camcorder.. or whip that lens off and plop on a nifty and get a look. Or use a macro, or do a timelord, shoot weddings photos in raw or. or or..

Thats why I didnt buy a camcorder to replace me EX1 .. I bought a mirrorless as my 'portable' camera (seperate from the 'cine' cameras I own)

I understand for some things (conferences) a camcorder may be it.

Speaking of camcorders I was watching this about the good old XL1. Boy I wanted that camera in the worst way but couldn't afford it. Shock how bad the image quality is compared to what we have today. But what a cool design! Removable lens with IS and a built in ND. I think if the camera companies thought there was a bigger market for camcorders they would innovate more but since most things are going towards content creators filming themselves I don't see much to look forward to for camcorders.

They're sell a $4,000 camcorder with 3 1/3" sensor that everyone else moved on from 10 years ago.

Sony is the largest imaging chip maker, and the Z190 was already a 1" chipper. So they can do it. The reviews were not all shallow DOF folks but long time video folks who were shocked at how much noise the camera has outside of direct sunlight. Anyway, something else to track for NAB.

The Z190 is not a 1" camera. It has 3x 1/3" sensors and a 25x optical zoom. Looks pretty decent outdoors in sun, but terrible performance in low-light.

Thanks. Sorry about that. Well then I will hope Sony feels the need to perfect the 1" chip camcorder! Or shrinks the Z280 and lowers the price of that product.
