Do you all think I'm getting close to the film look with my T2i?

I think the shots look OK, the more grading mainly the worse they get.

one big deal is the white hat. film or an alexa would hold that better

you could burn it down in post

or you could introduce mild but soft fill to raise the shadows while exposing for the hat.

So film/high end digital with a wide DR will hold shadow information better than a 'thin' camera. to battle this on a 'thin' camera you will do battle with fill light which is expensive, slow and difficult

Of course a wardrobe choice of an anything but white cap will help

(yes this is a big deal I shot a whole feature with a girl with a white tee.. it cost me at least two stops.. terrible choise)

So you are not going to get the film look in the grade .. you will get it by understanding the difference your camera reacts to light to how film does and will be lighting coposing and costuming to eat that difference. (and be bit tricky in post)

you could set a scene (a shelf full of toys and a desk lamp) and photograph it on a cheap stills film camera and then shoot the same scene with your dslr.

use the results to draw conclusions about what you need to match.

lol, it would be cheaper to buy a used Pocket and he's 75% there without doing much. (besides just having to expose and focus properly)

The T2i is capable of nice looking images, it just takes some work. Here's a short some friends I shot in 2014 trying to spoof the Bourne films:

The film was shot rebel style during an actual car show so we had plenty of extras that didn't even know they were extras, plus all the cool cars really added production value. There's a lot of wiping the frame too which helps. We used the flat style from Vision Color in the camera to record, which was also running Magic Lantern. We used a punchy style when the camera was in standby to know how exposure and colors were looking, then ran it through FilmConvert in post for the contrast and saturation. Pretty simple.

That might be your best work, lol.

[Not the quality because we know that quality pre-Blackmagic revolution but everything else.]

Appreciate it. Funny thing is, not sure we could of gotten away with half the crap we did if I had my current setup (URSA Mini 4K). For indie rebels, I've become a huge advocate of the BM pocket cams. You can still get away with murder but still get a good clean image compared to the Canon DSLRs.

Canon DSLRs changed in their final years after the world changed, and now their mirrorless' surpass the Blackmagics in different ways, but still could almost never beat the Pockets for the price.
