Cinema EOS Announcement on 19th Jan - EOS R5C

Because that would be 4Gbps and the camera or media probably can't handle that

4 Gbps is 500 MBps...

Camera probably can't, but per usual we don't know what it really can or cannot do.

Not complaining though, it's all amazing.

Woah! So true!

I was reading this article by Steve Tedlin, and and he said that we should listen to general advice and not have control over our own projects. He said people should not do 8K, and to not do 480p either, because 480p is too little, and 8K is too much reaolution. Also he recommends not to go past GO, and to NOT collect $200.

I'm not saying 8k doesn't have its uses. My response was to no longer needing closeups. We will never get to the point where large 8k is the norm. It will just never happen. Its ridiculous to create a project that can only be viewed in one way. Regardless of resolution its all about distance and scale. Same with text in video. Just because we have 8k doesn't mean text in video should be 12pt fonts. It still needs to be large enough for people to read at normal viewing distances. Most of our rules of composition and scale should not change at all. It will just have more clarity now. Just like retina displays and apps on mobile devices. Shoot 8k, 12k or 16k all you want. Just don't change the scale or composition.

There's a lot of strategy involved in Monopoly!

Been cruising around today in the van with paul - together we have a c200, r6, two r5 and a full history of 1dx and the like - chattin sh_it as ever.

Latest thought.

Slow switchover makes the r5c useless for the RnG actuality multi media crowd.

Micro hdmi make the r5c useless for the cinema crash cam C cam bonnet mount crowd.

Therefore it is 100% useless.

He’s out of line, but he’s right.

that was our mutual conclusion

we are on a 4 day shoot (5 locations a day - structured rng) and both are really using R cameras for the first time in anger.. it is interesting - I seem to have my r6 fairly dialled - he less so with the r5 (x2) that he is trying to do primary stills on and also collect a second motion angle when it presents itself.

c200 at 2000iso on a foggy day in the undergrowth with the 100-400 5.6.. (copied with my phone off a monitor) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZQF8wPqteK/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link its up there if the content is on message - this is

I’m quite amazed at how annoying hybrids are for switching between stills and video

The algorithm to adjust from stills to video seems like simple programing by comparison to AF and IBIS.

double or triple the shutter and open the shutter, with the option to utilize iso instead.

It wouldn’t even require a different mode, just one button for recording video and a different button for stills “shutter” capture.

using a second body in RnG situations is a bit fiddly. I feel for your collleague.

…i am seeing the sentiment that switching between cine and stills mode is a long wait.

obviously the wait is not fun, but is there NO video recording in stills mode?!

PS: another thing to consider is the exposure when switching between video in C-Log and Stills in Standard Profile. The middle grey is in a different place and the highlights or shadows are off by a stop. At least in the way it was implemented on the 1DC, so switching to stills, i had to remember to -1

We are simple people who dont understand gammas or profiles.

typicaly a still will be at 1/250 at4 maybe 800 and a motion at 1/50 at 4 at 200 or something

the two settings are not forgotten as one swaps from stills to motion

Im well experienced to change exxpose on the fly by a tinkle of the ISO or apertur.

in the sun yep wede need to find an ND

recroding video in stills mode.. who cares..

the r6, r5 and z6 (and some sonys?) have a switch to change modes in 1/10 of a second it is very good with those optons why waste your life on an r5c?

switching exposures in stills mode to give a video pleasing setting is too slow and pointless if you have one of many other cameras.

its instant on the z6..

Aside from huge unnecessary stills data, it'd be cool if the camera just alternated video and stills frames. You're shooting 180-degree shutter and while the camera rests between video frames it takes a still at a higher shutter speed. Closing the aperture and reopening that quickly might be a tall order

this is a good idea :)

Well,

in the 2020’s no “cine” badge camera should have less than 13 stops usable DR at an absolute minimum.

I can imagine the Canon marketing team being so enthralled with 8K raw that they forgot about what really matters to film makers and hybrid shooters.

Film is dead. Time for digital cine to stop being “video” at 24p.
