TikTok is now the most popular website

You left out a few:

Camera Guy
Shooter
Photog (if you are working for a local TV station you are called a photog)

Lighting cameraman. I believe that was the credit for Kubrick's DP John Alcott since Kubrick was basically his own DP. I'm not sure if it's a common title in England or something

I could think of a few new ones, such as Tripod Jockey and Camera Pilot. Feel free to use those on your business cards.

You won't believe this but I was just talking to New York the other day on the phone...it was like, "Gosh, I'm so glad Liam didn't move here when he had the chance."

Small world, man...small world.

I can't tell if that is meant to be funny or an insult. My comment was made with firmly tongue-in-cheek FYI.

haha...half of the time I'm trolling because I adore getting reactions out of people, especially some of the characters on DVXuser.

This place couldn't survive without such a strong cast.

True that.

Anyway back on the off-topic discussion; In regards to CameraMAN/WOMAN I have twice in the past year been put down as CAMERA which struck me as somewhat impersonal.

It's still used in some corners of the industry, though it was old fashioned even when I started in 1985...

In my opinion, unless there is someone on this forum who can standup and honestly say "I'm making great money doing videos on social media", I think this whole conversation is utter bull****. Show me the money or sit down and shut up . . . (not directed at anyone in particular) :-)

The largest AdSense check I've ever seen is $63k. That's one month. No ancillary revenue streams (merchandise, insta, FB, Twitch, etc). Sixty-three thousand dollars paid by YouTube via Google for advertising revenue.

Hi Yonnie. I see this is your 1st post. Was that check written to you? Are you a content creator or videographer?

Business checking account. I received a percentage.

Yes, Re: content creator. Am I a videographer? Sort of. I'm in the process of making the transition to credible filmmaker.

The content for the dough is rather embarrassing, tbh.

What's the channel?

What's the channel?

I lurk this site for one purpose. And, that purpose is to glean a bit of wisdom from genuine practitioners of the art. I'm not terribly interested in reopening old wounds. Or, being evaluated on material which I'm not particularly proud of.

If you have any questions about metrics, assembly, increasing visibility, building a channel, revenue streams, building a channel/"brand", I'll do my level best to answer them.

Sounds like you had a bad experience here before? I'm sorry to hear that. Everyone on this site is entitled to professional courtesy and respect. We're all just trying to make a living, which might involve turning tricks of one sort or another. I confess that I harbor a bit of an inferiority complex myself because when I was a student I wanted to make experimental films, documentaries, or feature films at one time or another. None of which I am currently making (although I shoot for small docs sometimes). My career choices have largely been lifestyle-oriented (ie pursuing shorter work days with better pay, which make it easier to have a personal life and a family.) I enjoy what I do and I'd rather shoot or edit in any capacity than take a job in another industry. But I look up to the folks making scripted (and budgeted/distributed) drama and comedy because that's the altar that I worship at. And that's the stuff I pay to watch in my free time.

Also, concerning "genuine practitioners of the art" -- my feeling is that, while all knowledge is useful, you don't necessarily want to make stuff for youtube in the hollywood fashion. I did some work for a youtube channel called the Superzeros -- a bunch of yahoos flash mobbing around Manhattan in Marvel costumes. The founders made a couple videos like that for fun that went viral. Then they hired me to increase the production value. But it seemed like the videos that performed well in that genre were more about the action itself and a feeling of spontaneity. A little rough around the edges. The funny came from the realness ("I can't believe they did that!"), which was enhanced by rough shooting that made it seem un-staged. So, I toned down the quality after a while and traded my steadicam (just a merlin) for swinging the camera around on a handheld monopod. A purposefully shaky look.

Out of curiosity, are you the cameraman and editor? How many hats do you wear? Did you co-found the channel? And what is your business relationship--informal or contractual? Thanks for lending us your expertise.
