Conventional wisdom now says Canon release a firmware patch in April that will add Manual Controls and 24p to the 5dM2. What started as rumor speculation has now become a near certainty in many posts by users on this board and others.

Question: Do you think Canon will come through with one or more of these changes as a firmware fix in the near future?

---

Personally, while I hope for the most features possible, I believe they will only add 25p. They can say it is a 'fix' for European countries as opposed to conceding that they are adding features via fimware. Here's hoping I am wrong...

What is the point of this poll ?

Canon have made no announcement, you may as well go to a palm reader and ask them what they think Canon are going to do by looking at the lines on your hands.

The poll will show a mixture of guess work and what people would like to see. The one option missing (the option any honest person would be compelled to select) would be "How should I know?".

"I believe they will only add 25p." what is this belief based on ?

Not sure why this is a problem.

No problem, just voicing my opinion. The poll will tell us what we know - people want manual control and 24/25p - as well as a good spread of guess work.

I decided to post it after reading post after post in this forum, dvinfo and cinema5d where people talked about the Firmware as if it were a certainty. Clearly it is not.

Agreed, since the 5DII was released there has been rumour after rumour, with people inerrant in their certainty that Canon are going to release a firmware update with manual controls, 24p and so on.

This latest rumour is just that, another rumour, just like the last one and the one before it and the one before that, going right back to Vincent Laforet's ruminations that Canon were going to look at implementing 24p/manual control.

Canon have no history of adding features or making big (non-corrective) firmware upgrades, I remember a similar fog of wishful thinking surrounding Canon giving HV20 users manual control, with people certain that it would happen, it was just a matter of when.

As for my speculative opinion, I explained above. I think it is a necessity for Canon in oder to address a obvious technical problem in the European market. Beyond 25p, it is a bunch of feature requests from optimistic, or sometimes disgruntled, owners. I hope they add everything, but don't think they will. But that's just a guess..

Cheers!

I agree 25p is a necessity, I have had numerous shots ruined by flicker/pulsing lights.

If the poll is about speculative opinion, I have to admit my honest contribution would have to be "How should I know" ! :)

I think 25p is a necessity, but the rumour of an email suggesting Canon might update it's firmware does not lead me to put any weight on the idea that they have decided to reverse their decision to make the 5D mark II shoot at 30p only.

Maybe I should just lighten up !

P.S I voted: "Manual Controls, 25p, 24p, AGC (Autogain) Override, Audio Monitoring"

How's that for cognitive dissonance?:P

if it happens, it will be aperture only, since you can 100% solve this with manual aperture ring lenses (people mostly use old nikons and most videographers have nikon primes anyway), so canon would fix this, just to get that cash flowing back to them from canon lens sales, not away from them...

other than that , that would be it.

If there will be a firmware update, I expect manual controls including ISO selection. I also think they will have additional updates such as Auto ISO in manual still photo mode. I think change of frame rate is out of the question.

I think Canon will simply send out miniature crutches you can hang off the camera and a sticker that says 'god bless tiny tim'

According to the 3 Canon reps at PMA I spoke with, we won't see manual controls or 24p in this iteration of the 5D MII - I'd say we're at least a year out IMO.

NO.

my feeling is that they could if they wanted to but choose not to for marketing reasons having to do with the rest of their lineup of DSLR's and their video division. owning buttloads of canon DSLR gear i can say that canon protects their "tiers" of gear better than any i have ever seen. of course i would happily take the "farm" if they chose to give it but i also cant fault them either for the way that they protect their lines of gear from a business point of view.

they gave us an "add on" and thats all it is at this point.

I think that if EUROPEANS unite and create a big joint voice, or even a lawsuit, stating that the machine doesn't work for PAL territories, Canon would have to, at least, supply 50hzs, and has a consequence, either 25p or 50p/i.

Its not nice, but its a matter of pushing to the EC (European Comission) the lack of compatibility with European standards...And we all know 25p to 24p is a much easier conversion...

Since I'm in Asia, no one cares...

Who are you going to believe, 3 Canon reps at PMA or some unproven and groundless internet rumour of an email from someone ? :zombie_smiley::)

I am getting my "I've got 24p" T-Shirt ironed and ready.

Lee Wilson : I think they will remove the ability to lock the exposure.

lmao, that would be a kick to the chops.

You wait until firmware update 1.09, I have heard they are thinking of changing the frame rate to 31.4 fps - 30p is just too convenient. 31.4p is the optimum frame rate for flickering lights - apparently even the light off people's teeth when smiling clashes with 31.4p.

31.4p for the win.

I would love to see AGC overide and audio monitoring, but how would that work exactly. How would you monitor the audio with headphones? This seems to be more a hardware issue and not a firmware issue.

If one of us yells they will not hear, but if we all get together and yell all at once, they might just stand up listen. If you want these controls, start hassling! And hit em where it hurts! The pocketbook is the only factor in their decision making, so make it a point! If they add manual, say you will buy a set L-series lenses and if they do not say you will buy Nikon glass. Other talking points could include recommending other cameras to your colleagues like the new Panasonic Lumix, selling the 5d and replacing it with another brand's camera like the Scarlet, or simply giving up Canon as a serious company for professional products.

It's just politics. If we're lucky, they might have a keyword sorting system that will add up the times "5d mark II" and "manual control" and "buy" mentioned in the same e-mail. Whatever the case, let's make some noise.

Canon hates us.

They just think we are dumbasses and should gobble up whatever they feel is in their best interest to feed us.

Little do they know how short sighted they are....

I guess my question is where is Nikon since I prefer them anyway????

Nikon!?!?!?!?!

Hellooooo!?!?!?!?

I don't think there will be any firmware update, which is why I'm hoping for the GH1, If I can't afford Scarlet. Canon have too many video sales to lose if they gave us a real DSMC. Of course video sales losses translate into DSLR sales gained but I bet they don't see it that way.
If they ever did give us a DSMC it would be as a (Hypothetical) 3D at £1000 or so more.
Yes I know I'm a grumpy. cynical old git, but I'm probably also right.
