nikon d90 footage to 35mm

We're aiming higher and wider than academy festivals, simple as that. Think "A" list and the big film markets, as well as the world outside of north america. And for shorts you typically need to be on 35 to screen before a competing feature since those are almost always on 35. Just trust us, you'll get there, or google it.

um...a-list like Sundance, Berlin even Cannes? According to The Google, they accept digital prints. (I'll assume you don't mean to come off presumptuous.... "we're aiming higher and wider...world outside north america..." But how could you know what I'm aiming for?)

But love your reel, btw, Matt. I"m eager to see more of your work.

Meanwhile, the brass tacks producer in me can't justify the print thing...Hell, festival fees without the print costs are getting harder to justify...

And congrats again, Daniel! I'm curious to see your film!

how could you know what I'm aiming for?
i can't, which is why you should have understood that i meant higher than the "real academy sanctioned" festivals you mentioned, no more no less.

why don't you just listen instead of just finding examples that you think proves i'm wrong but rather by being exceptions and special cases prove that i'm right? you *will* get into more and bigger festivals if you have a film print, assuming that the film is good enough of course, and they *will* look better on the screen.

We do filmouts in our Lasergraphics filmrecorder or to our ARRILaser filmrecorder.

We develop and print copies in Kodak Cine labs Greece and we are based in Athens Greece... We accept Tiffs, TGA's etc. for printing with 80% to 90% accuracy in respect to REC709 reference or Log DPX pre graded in our network of certified DI partners worldwide. Currently we have a partner in NYC that is http://www.contact-di.com/ and he can handle the color grading 100% accurately also we are in the process to certify a partner in Chile, he will be ready in about three months...

The cost per minute is 223 euros/minute for camera negative Kodak 5201 Vision2 print on Lasergraphics with Dolby SR analog sound from MOD and we deliver one copy in Kodak Vision Premier print stock along with negatives.

If you select to color correct your movie in one of our partners you pay to us the film recording and to him his services...

For ARRILaser on Kodak Intermediete stock 2242 with Dolby digital from MOD including a print in Kodak Vision Premier print stock the price is 328 euros/minute.

If interested either to became a partner or to print your movie send me an email to lakis@motionfx.gr.

This must sound like a silly question, but when you deliver sequence frames to a facilities house is it important that the first file name be zero or one? For example, "00000_name.png" or "00001_name.png".
Thanks.

that would depend on their system, but all systems i've worked with image sequences in haven't cared, you start at 4711 if you like.

Don't some fest use DVD? Maybe try show it around first before you drop a lot of money.

i don't think you understand. his film has already been "shown around" and people liked it so much they're paying for a blowup. in my case it's a feature made for theatrical release so it would be really stupid not to have it on 35mm, and besides it's in the budget so i would be screwing my suits if i didn't. sorry, but i'm gonna vanture into the field of potential pretentiousness and arrogance again and remind you that not all people consider local festivals showing dvd's and vimeo uploads distribution.

To the OP: Congrats! That's exciting news.

To MS: Good to hear your project is moving along nicely.

To all: Film is cool.

i don't know, but considering the level of most discussions on this board i'd be very surpised if many of the members have much experience with theatrical film distribution. i'm not trying to pick a fight but it is kind of insulting for an established filmmaker to be addressed as if you've made your first short and are ready to send it to a few fests. it would be cute i guess if it didn't so blatantly get in the way of a real discussion.

"i'll decide in september. :-) i'm most likely upscaling, but i haven't found my favorite final scaling algorithm from 801 to 1080, instant hd works really well, but i'm looking at some even better options."

Daniel, it seems that you have certain / better ways to upscale your footage according to Matthias Sandstrom's Final Cut plugin. I don't know if have already taken the plunge or if you're even editing on Final Cut but I Hope you find this interesting / helpful.

Hi There people.

so i don't usually do it but i think it will be intersting to show my new short film to a few people before doing the final work on it.
so i put it on Vimeo and i will let it there for the weekend. The main point is to get some feedback from you, tell me what do you think of it, send your comments to me by email danielaragao@gmail.com - that would be a pleasure to hear from you.

the film was shot in monochrome directly from the d90 in-camera software, no filter added yet, no color correction. the sound is still in the works, etc.

here's the link: http://www.vimeo.com/3878487

the password is: casa

hope you can help me by sending me the comments on the film itself (not just the technical work), please make your own review of the film.

thanks!

Top notch, easily the best short film I've seen on Dvxuser so far! Get ready to receive bags of awards...

Very very good.
At first I was watching because it was a D90 movie, but I quickly forgot about that and got sucked into the story. Great story. Natural and believable acting. Your framing was really good because it hid things that I wanted to see, so it kept me engaged. I liked how you focused on your main characters and never showed minor ones (the maid and his mom) I was really surprised how quickly the time went by. You made 19 minutes fly by like 6.

It slowed down a bit when you stop having audio. You're not finished with all the audio, right? If that's the case, it will probably be fine once the audio is in there.

On to the critiques- You have a lot of shallow DOF, and out of focus shots, and it might be a little too much, I think, although there's a lot of beautiful ones. The one that particularly bothered me was of Pricila's father before he puts on his glasses. Too long to be out of focus, I thought. The other, which was used twice was when she walks into focus in a low shot.

So, when they are in the car the first time, the father knows, right? If so, maybe one other shot of him with that, "I know" look would give us a clue that we connect with later on.

I do have questions about the ending. I guess I don't really know what happened, sort of. It doesn't feel like a BANG ending, which you may not want, but it is more like, "what happened?, what did the boy do?, what is the girl going to do?" Lot's of questions. It keeps me wanting more, which is a good thing, and I could easily see this as the first part of a feature. With what you have already, you could keep going and have an awesome movie.

Any critiques I mentioned are very small, as nothing really took me out of the movie. They are only critiques if I HAD to say something that might be improved. I see why someone would pay to have this transfered to film. It's excellent in the most important ways- Story, script, and acting. Can't wait to see the final version.

Daniel,

I would usually come up with constructive criticism, but there really isn't a lot to critize, it's very close to perfection. Acting, cinematography/story-telling, editing/pace, the use of sound and silence, everything was great. I also liked the fact that we can imagine our own story after it ends. The film is unpredictable, romantic, sad and very 21st century. It triggers all kinds of emotions and that's an extraordinary quality for a short film. Bravo!

Is this your first film and how old are you, if I may ask? A bit of information about you and the making of your film would be awesome!

I would guess that this was done purposely. I think it's perfect the way it is!
