Im sure just like hard drives you dont get a full 16GB on the 16GB p2 card, but Im only getting about 14.5GB on mine. Surely there isnt over 1 GB of info on the card that has to be there for it to work? am I the only one not getting a full 16GB on my 16 card?

yup. thats about right.

16 gig aint 16 gig. same way a 2x4 isnt 2"x4" - dont know why, just the way it is...

Wait 'till you buy some 32's... you only get 29.44 GB on those. That's the way it all works.

what worries me more is that there is supposedly a finite number of cycles the P2 cards are able to store-offload-reformat....

It's a marketing thing all manufacturers and sellers do for memory...1024 vs 1000 as a measurement . They round off the number and say it's a gig. It's not. It used to be done with megs too.

Actually in the current P2 cards we are saying about 100,000 re-writes.

There is some memory, not within the P2 cards, but more like Flash or SD Memory where there is a finite number, like 2500 re-writes. But you also would need to know what makes up a re-write. As an example, if you fill a card half way, and then reformat, that is not a full re-write, it is only a 1/2. Do that twice and you have one re-write. It is probably why in the use of SD and Flash with still cameras, it is never noticed, as they rarely get really filled. In general 2500 re-writes would give you a couple of years of working memory for video and then it will start to dissipate. It would just go down in available memory probably stating around 75% of capacity and then over the next couple of weeks really start to fall.

Hope this helps,

Jan
