I'm in Hoffman Estates. What type of work would you be using your HMC on?

as of now just weddings/parties and stuff. never owned a real camera before. my first was a hand me down which was a old phillips that recorded on standard vhs cassettes and my second was a sony hi8 and a mini dv. and from there i went straight to the hmc150. im actually starting school in april for visual effects and motion graphics. thats what i have been wanting to do all my life. unfortunately i wasnt able to pursue it out of high school so 8 years later after graduating im going back to school. lol. what do you do? and as a hobby or a profession?

I mainly do wedding videos as a part time thing.. Hey really cool that you're going back to school! I almost went to an art school for visual effects or transportation design, but ended up going to a Big Ten college for Computer Science instead.. LOL!

You won't regret the purchase and you'll be able to recover it's costs pretty quickly. A week or so after I had mine and it was paid off. Much easier to do that quickly than if I had a Red or a loaded 500 or such... This cam is a steal at this price.

Yeah I know what you're saying.. I've only got 2 gigs booked so far this year.. What do you think of the prospects of selling the cam after my 2nd wedding? How much depreciation would I see if I sell it in August?

booggerg2 you should'nt lose a whole lot on it. unless panasonic comes out with something new that drops the price on the hmc by alot then you should be good. are you planning on upgrading to a different cam or just getting rid of it?

Justyn how in the world did you recover its cost in only a couple of weeks after? lol. you must have alot booked this year. btw what do you do?

Not upgrading it.. just don't want to hang on to gear that I might not use for a long time while it depreciates.. I wonder if it's more cost effective to sell it and then pick one up again later on if I need it..

I had a christmas concert that I produced and I got the camera for doing the work. It was about two weeks of work and I also had a couple of high end shoots. I do broadcast, corporate, and independent features/media events. Most are multicam shoots and I'll package the whole crew with equipment.

The economy is kicking me in the bollocks though. I've lost work that I've been able to count on for the past 15 years. It's a very weird market and I have to really be eager and pro-active to land the work. Every month I'm hearing of some friend or family member who's loosing their job.. and these are productive people.. man, what is going to become of us...

Well... something will come up again. I did work probably 9 or 10 months out of last year and that's a full year for me so it was a good one financially.. Would like 2009 to be the same.

Its funny that you posted this question, then purchased the camera less than an hour later. Don't worry, you made the right move! If you could afford buying it in the first place, you should be able to make proper use of it before it loses much value. These cameras are almost non existent on the used market, probably because nobody wants to get rid of them :) That is a good sign it should have a decent resale value for some time. DVXs lost a bit of value for being tape based and not HD, but I can't see many major improvements over the 150 in the next few years other than maybe a sharper picture. Biggest factor on tape camera resale was time on the heads... that doesn't exist anymore.

I live in Chicago, but couldn't imagine trusting something like this out!
