Redrock M2 Encore Test Footage

Ive seen some hv20 24p 1/48 footage with adapter and motion blur and movement is very different for the eye, also some 24p 1/48 with hvx200 look different from vimeo vids.Thats why i asking and im pretty sure that shutter algorithm in Z5 is just different and even if in theory is the same number (1/48) then its very different from hv20.Tests from other cams dont look so filmic like Z5.

Ok I've had my order in since feb. 10th with redrock and i'm drooling at the mouth to go shoot after seeing these vid's. I know I ordered almost every product :) but lets get the thing shipped! I really am patient.

If you purchased just one lens for the m2e for all around what would you buy?

imthinking - my 'desert island lens' is a 50mm f1.4 - incredibly versatile, fast, and inexpensive. I'm sure other people would suggest a zoom, but the fastest zooms out there are f2.8 and tend to breathe a lot. A fixed focal length also helps you develop good habits around camera placement rather than just zooming in and out to frame your shot.

my 2 cents

I listened to the podcast from redrock on the lens last night and that helped a lot. My wife is a photographic genius so she is guiding me through this new love life of mine :) I think I will buy the 50mm Zeiss from the red site in a week or two as that seems to be a good versatile lens to start with.

Wow. Fintastic. That footage stopped down to f8 is what really got me interested. That's my only beef with my LEX, past f4 I gotta be careful.

I just got my Encore upgrade today. I shot some test charts with the old M2 and the M2Encore upgrade - will share the results soon. Must finish LossFest entry first.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the M2 much more expensive than the Letus Extreme and does it not also flip the image upside down?

I'm not sure which is more expensive but i've used both. You get what you pay for.

The image is right-side up with the MicroX. It's not upside down.

And these are all shots with the M2 Encore. I do know that Trevor Meeks upgraded his old M2 into the Encore. His footage is listed on the original post (airplane footage) but here it is again.

The Encore is much more comparable to the Ultimate in core technology (rotating vs. vibrating), performance, and features.

Second, the fully Encore kit including rod support system, baseplate, lens mount, etc. is $1995 - less than 1/2 the price of just the Ultimate.

Even if you compare it to the Letus Elite (which is about the closest you'd get feature-wise, though that still suffers from vibrating motion) that is $1995 for just the adapter.

Affordability is one of our primary design criteria.

Voice: these are all shot with the Encore.

Hi brian, can you tell why your adapter is $500 more than the sgblade when there seems to be no advantage in sharpness, and overall quality?

Hi reem12

Based on your previous posts, I'd say you have already made up your mind the SGBlade is your answer regardless of my response :)

But let's take it one piece at a time:

First, regarding price: given the fluctuations in international currencies, that kind of price difference doesn't mean too much. A year ago the exchange rate was 1.9 pounds to the dollar vs 1.4 now. A comparison of products prices with that limited of a spread isn't very meaningful in today's economy.

Second regarding image: I'm not sure how you make this assessment with limited footage on the Encore and no direct comparisons. From what I've seen on our steadicam tests vs. SGBlade, I'd say the Encore cleanly outperforms on wide angle lenses.

Also I presume you haven't seen the M2 Encore in person, so I don't know how you would evaluate our product quality. Redrock is known for our exceptional build quality. We manufacture everything ourselves and do not use any hot glue in our construction.

And finally you are getting features in the Encore you don't get in the SG such as LiveLens for Canon EF lenses (which we will be showing at NAB, btw).

So I don't think you can draw any conclusions at this time for direct comparisons one way or another. We are extremely confident the Encore is an exceptional solution for achieving film look.

Thanks again

Brian

Brian - Is the Encore and your Redrock Follow focus compatible with the Zacuto zip gears around a Nikon lens. Just wonding if the gears will be able to meet, or if the box will get in the way. Thanks!

Brian, is the LiveLens coming out at NAB (April 18) instead of late March (end of Q1) like originally planned?

Hi GTP - I don't see any reason they would be incompatible - the only important requirement is that they are film pitch gearing 0.8. The microFollowFocus adjusts left-right to fit the closer diameter of the zip gears.

Knal - we will definitely be showing LiveLens at NAB. We'll post an update on the release date shortly.

Thanks

Has anyone on here upgraded from the original M2 to the Encore that has an opinion on whether or not it's worth the extra $500 to get the upgraded MicroX? I'm trying to budget myself here, and can't find anything that convinces me there is a $500 difference between the MicroX I just bought last year and the MicroX Encore. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks guys,

Patrick

Hi Patrick

It is not a requirement to upgrade the microX for your HVX200. The new microX provides

1/2 stop light improvement
larger optics for Sony EX compatibility
integrated coupler for easier setup.

Hope that helps

Brian

Thanks Brian. Maybe I'll start with just getting the Encore upgrade for the M2 itself then. And sometime down the road maybe go with the New MicroX. But who knows, you may have a new upgrade by then as well lol.

Patrick - that is a great approach. Not only is there an upgrade path, but you can take it in steps.

Cheers

Brian
