D90 color compression is YUV422?

I don't know if this was discussed before but I found this Mac utility:

I analyzed one of my D90 AVI clips and it shows the better 422 chroma subsampling format instead of 420 which I thought it would be.

That's pretty damn cool, so it would only make sense that chroma keying would be quite easier then we thought?...I've only seen one video using chroma key, anybody else got more clips?

I haven't had a lot of luck with croma, because of the softness and compression artifacts. But the croma subsampling was never a problem (I can't see it under the mjpeg... :D )

This has been covered a trillion times, but if the data rate is increased, do we lose the compression artifacts, or is it the codec?

That's an odd question. The codec is what controls the bitrate. The higher the quality, the lower the compression, the higher the bitrate. Or what do you mean?

I'll rephrase that, if the data rate gets pumped up (if nikon cared for us), will that get rid of the compression artifacts or is the MJPEG codec crappy?

that's still the same question. it's quite obvious that the higher the bitrate the higher the quality thus at some point the artifacts will disappear, so i still don't understand what you want to know. at what rate do the artifacts disappear enough for pulling a decent key? i'm guessing around 50-100mbit since mjpeg and dvcpro are very similar.

Yeah I guess what I'm asking is if MJPEG is a good codec and if that was the reason for D90's quality compared to DVCPRO/AVC/the others.

well there's no such thing as a good or bad codec per se. they all strive to encode an identical copy of the original. at a high enough bitrate they all succeed and at a low bitrate they all fail. their respective efficiency in-between varies, but any codec will outperform any other codec if you just give it enough bits.

Has there been any confirmation that there is in fact one that is going to be released?

not that we're aware of I'm afraid......but if Nikon doesn't get it's act together there might be a lot of D90's going cheap on ebay soon.....that can't be good for business especially now when nobody is spending money on expensive toys.

Yeah it has been rumored, busted, and seems unlikely, but one can always hope.

It's much more likely Nikon comes up with a 5d competitor, this market is ripe for the taking.. Screw the recession I want me a D400/D800!

depression rather

the D700 has similar specs to the 5D but is quite a bit cheaper. A D800 5D killer can't be that far away.

it's not at all unlikely that they set the bitrate as high as the electronics could handle. *or* they set it so that files would be a manageable size since they thought people would only use this for "fun", in which case they should definitely fix it.

mb we should start a fund and get a hacker to fix the bloody thing. we all know that it is capable of so much more. manual shutter and 50mbps mjpeg would be plenty.
