HPX500 or HPX300 / CCD or CMOS

forgot to mention what is probably my most favorite aspect of the 500, the low light performance. it really is pretty much amazing. There are times where I am at press events, indoors, using the first stop of ND, the guys with Z1s and HVX200s need litepanels for pop, and I dont need anything, it's great.

Barry, we know Jan "the product manager" said there is no update for the HPX500.
I think what Joe is saying and myself is, will there ever be a HPX500A....or HPX600...or what ever you'd like to call it with the HPX300 R&D. like Joe said a "500 head and a 300 body".

I'm the new guy here and this question will probably not make me a popular guy.

Keep in mind Barry does not work for Panasonic. He has some priveleged information as he does do some testing of cameras for me, but there is not way that he would know the answer to any of these questions.

As I said before there is not an upgrade to the 500 on the horizon.

I do disagree with Barry on one point above with the AVC-Intra. Once the footage is in AVC-Intra, there is a post scenario to face. This is something we have done for years, move the product to a higher level and it will suffer less in post. This would be true with the 500 and AVC-Intra.

Best to all,

Jan

I do not see it on the horizon. I said this before.

Thanks,

I do not see it on the horizon. I said this before.

That's causing kind of a Canon 5D Mark II frustation to me: You see that a nearly perfect product could be done and then there are those rescrictions due to company politics.

But I suppose one of the compromises of the HPX500 is to keep it as long as possible unchanged to make its attractive price possible.

Upgrading the HPX500 to avc intra and higher rez ccd's- 1280x720, for example- would mean the end for the HPX2000. It would need for AVC-Intra to be in all above level 2/3 Panasonic cameras first to go to the lower end model. At least that's the way it makes structural sense, taking into consideration the hierarquic order of the cameras (not sure if this makes sense in english).

I wonder if this makes sense commercially. How many HPX2000 does Pana sell every year compared to the potential selling quantity they could have of an upgraded HPX500 (of course at a lower prise point then the HPX2000) ??? I think the cost prise of building AVC-I goes down already now else they could have not built the HPX300 at this price point. I think a fusion of the HPX500 and the Hpx2000 is inevitable.

HPX300 is a very nice looking camera. I saw the clip from Sacuto.
From a price point of view it has two drawbacks:
1: P2 - P2 is nice but way too high priced - extra 3200us$ for 4 16Gb cards
2: Expensive battery unit. Extra 1500 us$ - Charger/2 batteries

Almost halve the price of the camera just for power and memory to get on the way.
VLock batteries are great, but why not make a simple adapter to use standard 7.4volt batteries in series instead of the standard VLock babies. I know, you can get one from
Swit i think, but it should be offered by Pana to keep the costs for the user down.
I know, the first priority of a business is profit, but without customers no profit.

Kenny,

I just introduced a new battery package from Anton Bauer, it has 2 Hytron 50s plus AC Adapter and Charger for $995, not $1500. A smaller battery wouldn't work very well in this stly of camera. And the Hytron50 will run the camera in record with the LCD and VF on for 2 hours, 56 minutes.

Not sure why you feel you need 4 cards, but you could get 32GB cards for the same time, and spend less than that. So yes you do end up having to spend more up front, but keep in mind that the cards are equipment and thus they could be part of the leasing package because they have serial numbers. They can be reused many, many times, so the cost of the card goes down with every use.

Best,

Jan
