Best software for removing noise from EX1 footage?

I was forced to shoot some footage the other night at 12db.
What's the best software for removing some of the noise without killing the image?
thank you,
Michael

Good question. But is any of it available for the Mac? How well do these things work? Is is a "worth while" purchase?

2 things you can try. crush the blacks. you can do this many ways but one way is to put the 3-way color correction from final cut on and goto the left of the 3 color circles. drag the fader on that one to the left a little, it will help. another filter to bring back the brightness without too much gain is the HSL filter, just crank up the "lightness" parameter

Neat Video is available for mac as a AE plug-in and it works great. BUT the render times are horrific for me, But you may have a faster computer.

http://www.yuvsoft.com/pdf/Video_Denoiser_Comparison.pdf Here is a good link for a denoiser comparison. MSU denoise (1) and Neat Video (2) seem to be the best around.

Thanks! And Neat isn't too expensive. That's always a plus! I'm going to give it a try next time I have to shoot with the gain turned on. I wonder how it works with night footage? (lots of grain in the blacks) That's something I'm really looking forward to shooting with our EX3. I've seen lots of beautiful night footage that people have shot with it (fireworks, lighted boat parades, halloween, etc...). This looks to be a great tool to eliminate any grain issues that crop up.

Thanks!

I like MSU denoise. Seems to be a better algorithm than neat video, and it's free.
I was going to come on here and highly recommend Neat Video. But your comment has me curios. I think I’ve downloaded this last summer but never used it. I always thought there was nothing better than Neat video because it does the job so well but is quite easy to overdo. Thanks for the heads up….plus…you can’t beat free.

Where can you download MSU Denoise for the Mac? (I did a Google search and couldn't find it)

It's a pluging for Virtualdub, which is PC only. Sorry.

Virtualdub is a workhorse freebie program where it seems a lot of folks test out their algorithms before packaging and selling them. I believe Neat was one of those. There have been others.

That MSU stuff is often not the fastest, but they make some KILLER plugins. I tend to do all my pre-processing in Virtualdub first, and then take my clean video into my NLE for final work. I do any resizing, denoising, frame-rate changes, audio changing or bit-rate conversions, etc. there.

Seems no one is doing this kind of cutting edge stuff on the Mac. Except maybe the RED guys.

Thanks Perrone,

At least we have the option of Neat for the Mac. I'm glad you say that it's close to being as good as MSU.
