24-70mm zoom for 35mm adapter

Duncan,

The shape of the silver residue is rectangle (maybe 1 inch by 1/2 inch). It does not look like the picture you provided.

1 inch by half inch sounds more like someone's asset tag that got peeled off when the lens was sold by the business or government agency that originally bought it. You see this a lot when the military auctions off camera equipment, which is where some amount of stuff on ebay comes from.

I've got a Nikon 28-70 2.8 and it's great. I paid about $1000 for it on eBay several months ago. I use it with a Letus Extreme/HVX200a/Optimizer kit.

Does this lens has constant aperture? Is the focus internal or external? I've found that lens that gets shorter or longer when focusing causes quite a fuss when using it with mattebox.

So I got the lens from e-bay and tested it out today. It has issues. It will not focus properly at infinity. I even hooked it up to my Nikon still camera and it will not focus at infinity at any zoom position. My still camera can lock the focus on closer objects only. In manual focus I have the same issue. So I contacted the seller. Here's what he said:
-------------------------------
Sorry to hear about the problem with the lens. I will be happy to refund your money less the 10% fee for the return to cover my costs of shipping, listing and relisting the item. This fee was was stated in the original listing. As an alternative, if you are interested in sending the lens to Nikon for repair, I would be happy to pay for the cost of the repair of the lens. This way they could clean it and get it working in tip top shape. Please let me know if this is something you are interested in doing. Please accept my apologies for the problem with the lens - as I said before I have no Nikon bodies, an no way to test the condition fo the lens. Had I known this was an issue I would have fixed the lens before selling it.

I was impressed that he responded so quickly. What should I do (get it fixed or return it) and what do you think about the 10% fee?

Buying off ebay is tricky. I wish I could buy new, but they don't make this lens anymore.

The seller paid to have the lens repaired! It works great now. This may be a blessing as now the lens has been checked out by Nikon. I can't wait to shoot something. Too much ebay drama!

Can you share approximately how much it cost to have it fixed? It would be handy information if we ever need to have a lens repaired.
