HMC 150 and Libec Tripods

Anyone using a Libec LS-22 or LS-38 with their HMC 150 . I need a new tripod for my camera and looking for feedback on these . I've tried a friend's Libec TH-M20 and while it's good for traveling I'd like something a bit sturdier . Thanks,

Dave

I have a Libec Tripod. I like it. It will handle the my current load just fine. Nice and fluid. Don't have any problems with it.

I don't plan on loading up the camera with adapters so the TH-2000 might be a bit beefier than I need . I'd like some portability with whichever tripod that I decide on .

That is the 38. I would not consider it to be a "portable" tripod in that it's not small. If you're willing to spend more, I would recommend the Miller Solo Carbon Fiber. Very portable, very reliable.

Thanks,

I'm used to tripods used for Betacam size cameras so the dimensions of the LS-38 would be portable for me . I'm just wondering how well it works with a camera as light as the HMC 150. I believe I read that it has no tension adjustments .

Well, I've only used the Libec, and old Gitzo, Bogen 501, and Miller Solos, so I wouldn't say I've had a lot of experience with tripods. But I like my tripod and feels that it fine with just the HMC 150 alone. I've never had a problem with it, so I can't complain.

It doesn't have the tension adjustments, so it might bother someone who is used to it. If you're Orange County, CA you can always stop by to test it out.

Thanks for the info Anthony and thanks for the offer of trying it out , but I'm a couple of states east of you .

I have an LS-38 that I use with the HMC and an XHA1. I use the tripod for both clean and adapter shoots (+ SGPro R3). It's good for the weight, haven't used others so I cant really compare but its without question sturdy enough to handle the weight. I notice sometimes that there's a bit of play on camera-with-adapter pans, but with the camera itself, very smooth.

Like I said, no experience with other tripods other than a busted Manfrotto before but there is two things that I wish it had:
- vertical adjustment instead of having to readjust all three legs to increase height
- tension adjustment

It does have a 100mm bowl which is perfect for many sliders (I use a T-slide X48).

The Libec finish looks particularly good for the HMC150 too, gray on gray. Hehe. Bonus.

Having said that, I do sometimes wonder what a few hundred more would get, in the form of a Sachtler or Miller. Just wonder.

Does anybody have any experience with the Matthews M25? It was based on the Libec, in fact they look very similar.

I have the Mathews 25. pretty good. It's a little underpowered for my JVC HD110, with IDX battery and FE DTE and Senheizer ME66 with fuzzy. But it does a fair job.. just a little springing at full 88mm zoom. Much better than a Bogen 501 or probabaly a 503. I'm looking at a Libec 38 or 2,000.

the Mathews was a manufactor for Libec or maybe the other way around. I think it's similar to Libecs smaller tripod, even though it's rated at 15 lbs. The Libec is rated at 17 lbs. The Libec is about 3x the price but looks in the pictures to be built beefier. that being said the Mathews 25 is MUCH better than a manfrotto at twice it's price.

I picked up 2 Libec TH2000's from a Ca. pawn shop for under $200! one needed a base plate, and the other had a cracked handle mount (which I replaced w/ an order to Libec).

These are the baddest, beefiest Tripods I ever laid eyes on!!

Which brings the question of the HMC150 mounting plate. The Libec looks to be 3/8", the 150 is 1/4"....

Does anyone know if Panny offers a 3/8" mount plate or adapter, and where to get it?

Or am I reduced to...uh....gulp! "Drilling & Tapping"! Yikes!

That was a great deal!

You get these plates/screws from the tripod manufacturer. My Manfrotto came with both 3/8" and 1/4" screws for the mounting plate, and the Libecs probably did too when they were new. I'd go to customer support on their website.

I know you were joking about drilling and tapping.....

Yeah...don't think I would resort to drilling!

The Libec head has the 3/8" bolt machined to the base plate! No way that's coming off. And the 1/4" would just drop out of the slot unless it were fitted somehow. The 150 on the other hand has 4 small screws holding the 1/4" base plate onto the camera.

I guess I could make something up at the local machine shop. Just, seemed logical Panny would supply/offer both base plates! Especially since the 150 is considered "pro"!
