I am about to send some of my Super 8 films away to be restored and converted either into files or mini-DV tape in HDV format. They tell me that AVI files are easier to edit than HDV files, and AVI is four times less compressed. So I was wondering if I should ask for AVI files instead of HDV? I shoot with a Canon XH-A1 so I usually edit HDV on Final Cut Express (Mac G5 non-Intel), and would probably be mixing in some of my HDV video with the restored film footage files.
So my question: should I go with AVI? I do like mini-DV as a storage medium. But is AVI worth the quality if I can get it? This company is doing a restoration to hi-def quality of my Super 8 stuff -- at least, as hi-def as they can get old Super 8 to look. Once I get the AVI files, would it be that big a hassle to put that raw footage onto mini-DV tape anyway?
One more question -- if I decide to send them an external hard drive to put the AVI files onto, any suggestions as to a good cheap one under $100 that works with a Mac G5?
