23.976 fps (24p) to VHS tape??

Hello everybody!

I have to submit a short film to school and they require it to be on a vhs tape in ntsc format. As I understand it ntsc means 60i, but of course I want that 24p look.

Should I
1-Shoot 24p (not A) and edit in a 60i timeline and put that on the VHS.
2-Shoot 24pA and edit in a 23.976fps timeline. Then export a version as is, in 24p for the internet, and a version adding the 3:2 pulldown to put on the tape. I'd prefer this since the footage on the net would be real 24P(23.976).

Would the second option degrade the footage with the removing/adding pulldown? Can FCP6 add the 3:2 pulldown?

Thanks for your help.

Definitely shoot 24pA and edit on a 23.976 timeline. You can add pulldown on the export. Down't worry about "degrading" the footage on export, because you're copying it to VHS! =:O

Thanks Barry!

I have two other questions:

1- What would be the best way to tranfers to VHS? I was thinking of exporting the final footage to the dvx via firewire and then to the vcr through the rca-out on the dvx. Is this possible? Will all these steps degrade the footage?

2- Should I shoot sqeeze or letterbox? They'll be able to change the ratio if they watch it on a lcd screen or a monitor, but if I shoot sqeeze and they watch it on a traditional 4:3 tv the footage will end up verticaly streched. Then again, this is film school, are they really going to look at this on an old-school tv??

Thanks again!

They are asking for your project on vhs, they might try to play the tape through a film projector.

But seriously, I'd say play it safe and shoot letterbox.

If it's going to VHS, that's an inherently 4:3 format, so I would choose letterbox. And yes, all those steps will degrade the footage, but it'll still be better than VHS is capable of recording. Keep in mind that VHS is the lowest-quality way ever devised to record any video signal (okay, PixelVision, but other than that...) :)

So, yes, you should be able to play right out of your timeline, through firewire, into the DVX, and out the RCA port to your VHS deck. Be sure to use SP mode on the VHS deck so it retains any semblance of quality whatsoever.

Wow VHS. They should be ashamed of them selves.
