NEW ADAPTER: Redrock M2 Encore

i likke the filmic bokeh of the original gg on the m2 just not the horrible vingnetting and soft edges. but in all honesty, though i like the sharpness and .5 lightloss of the extreme, the texture of the m2s glass just looks so much more filmic. does anyone else notice this, or is it just me. After looking at all the past redrock footage, i'm convinced that it looks a little more filmic the my old sgpro rev3 in my opinion.

I just hate the fact that red rock took so long to upgrade their system.

I totally agree with the bolded statement.

Here's one of the setups we shot using the Encore. Sorry it took so long.

Normally we would have more shots to work with for this scene but because we only had 3 hours to shoot it, we could only do a few takes of each setup. So there were some mistakes made like not being able to break up the white walls in the background. But we ran out of time to do that. I was lazy with the editing, the music isn't right and the sound hasn't been tweaked. Normally I'd get these things perfect, but this is a picture test and those things don't really matter right now.

I have some more footage I'll post as soon as I edit it up. We scheduled more stuff to shoot but the rain this weekend and valentines day really messed things up. I had entire 3 page scene at a park with hot chicks and everything. And then it rained. :(

More to come.

Looks awesome! Can't wait for more footage.

What camera was this shot on?

[edit]
Nevermind, just saw the HVX-200 in the equipment list at the bottom of the link. Was this the 200 or 200a?

[edit #2]
Oh, and the footage looks great, BTW.

Definitely nice footage, good job. What lens(es) did you use? There was some softness to the images that may be attributed to either the camera, the len(es) and/or the adapter [would have to see some shots on different cameras/lenses to tell for sure]. Also, how far in were you zoomed? Along the left side of the frame in some of the shots [and less so on the right], it looked like there was some darkening [could possibly be from the grading as well]...

Looks like a big improvement in light loss for sure... Footage was pretty grainless with very little CA.

Thanks for posting!

We were using Zeiss lenses and a Tokina 80-200. If you're seeing darkening it's either because of the grading or we bumped the zoom on the HVX and came back to too far. We didn't have it taped down.

I graded it with magic bullet and it was the first time I had used the new version so I might have thrown a softner effect on it and not known it. I'm positing a lighter graded file and then i'll post the raw file.

Specifically where are you seeing softness?

Also how do you like your HPX170?

looks nice, but it seems it has lost the bokeh that was famous with their earlier model. Looks like the Blade's Razor element wins out on this one.

the hvx 200 is a work of art. that was very clean. but I would half to agree with papa about having the look of the old ground glass. I've seen tiny camera look like film with the old gg bokeh.

is there anyway to get the encore with the original glass element, without sacrifising edge sharpness.

The softness is evident from the very first frame. So many things during the entire workflow from acquisition to post to render that could affect image quality... That of course is in addition to the equipment itself [camera, adapter, lenses, etc.] Also, it's pretty tough to focus perfectly with the HVX if you didn't use an external monitor. I didn't look at it blown up on a big screen, but personally, it didn't bother me in the slightest on my computer screens at 24".

As always when new products first come out, the early examples of footage get scrutinized pretty closely by everyone.

As far as the HPX170 is concerned, I really like the camera now that it's pretty dialed-in. The lens wobble was fixed a long time ago and I've spent a number of hours tweaking it [thanks to many posts here] and now think it's about as clean as it can be. Definitely pays to learn how each camera setting affects the image.

It's now paired with with an SGBlade with both Rotorazors and I'm about to start shooting a 20-30 minute short with the rig for a June screening date. I'm keeping my fingers crossed I won't have any equipment issues...

Papa,

The bokeh isn't any different than what I got with the M2. I have some great shallow DOF footage but I haven't posted it yet.

You're not seeing it too much on these shots because they're wide shots and on the closeups the actors are standing in front of a while wall.

That first shot was tough because the DOP was pushing the dolly and racking focus at the same time. So you there could be softness with not being squarely focused on the subjects. That's a hard shot to get without a crew.

It doesn't matter if it's wide or not, I can tell by the diffusion aspect of the image from the hilights that it there isn't enough diffusion in the GG. But by all means, post something else and lets see the bokeh sing. Otherwise It looks like the RR 1 and RR 2 win.

I'll get some more stuff up ASAP so you can take a look.

I know some other people are shooting some test footage so hopefully they'll be able to add to the mix. I wasn't trying to get a sharp picture or showcase highlights, I was just testing the Encore for a the way I shoot (FAST). The images work for me. I'm extremely happy with them. They won't work for everyone and I understand that.

I'm fan of shooting things with natural light and keeping the crew very small. Which is what I did here. It was a two person crew including me. In the past I would have needed to set up some lights or reflectors with the M2. Still love the M2 but that was the reality of the adapter. Didn't need the lights this time. GREAT.

With that said, the Encore did what I asked of it and for just putting it on the tripod and hitting record without calibrating anything... it works. That was my test.

I saw the m2e today at Broadcast live and im quite impressed. The image is very nice, Edge to edge looks good and I couldnt see any CA, and found it hard to make it on purpose.

The lens barrel marks were accurate, seems fairly solid, although it is very ugly, out of the four main players.

I was suprised.

Lens was Zeiss 50mm F1.4 (the one on the redrock site) and the camera was an EX3 (no relay or anything)

I played with the m2e for a bit yesterday...I didnt think it was ugly as the oversize box gives the whole setup better form than letus etc(in my very humble opinion).
It only had a 7inch ish monitor so cant really comment on quality but it looked nice..what was great was using ex3 lcd peaking to pull accurate focus(never used it before and it is liberating).

I hope it can cope with my ex1

I am taking a trip to the production gear shop early next week to have a proper go...I shall take my cash too!
