camera test for indie-feature, with 5Dm2...seriously.

Seriously, the motion is jerky and jumping all over the place. This could due to conversion, or to Vimeo. But, other stuff on Vimeo has smooth motion.

I'd think twice before comitting to this camera for a feature.

Ive notice choppy playback sometimes on vimeo- I think thats more of a computer issue. It looks smooth here.

anyway Hunter - Question. I saw on your blog that you used Manual Canon Compatable Lenses. Did they keep the camera from trying to control the aperature? How much of the black "crush" did they control. One of the big problems I saw with the Canon 5DM2 was the fact that the camera crushed the blacks so badly.

I actually used nikon lenses with an EOS adapter, that way you have control over the aperture.

It turns out the camera wasnt ever crushing the blacks or whites, it was just not displaying the full range unless you brought down the levels in color. The new version of quicktime 7.6 seems to fix the issue all together, you can read about it here: prolost.blogspot.com

Thanks, I'll check it out.

Did you try to access the video file directly through the HDMI port? and capture the files there? Has anyone talked about that yet? Also I saw you said a reverse S curve on your blog. Can you manually adjust the curve or is that the "flat" setting.

I'm very interested in what could be the next best camera as I may be purchaing a camera in the near future. I'm not interested in video work, only movie work. So lack of auto focus or "getting everything in focus" or weight, etc are not my concerns. Only picture quality and the ability to do simple things like dollies, cranes, basic pans.

Besides the rolling shutter and lack of 24p, the only other issue I see is captureing the best image. Outputting to Convergen Design's Flash XLR could bypass the compression and you could record at 50Mbps or 100Mbps. If the 24p was "fixed" then the MarkII could be stronger than the EX1 for movie production.

Oh thats not from my blog, thats from the prolost blog. I just turned the sharpening off in camera and turned contrast to -4 and color to -2. I didn't mess with the hdmi ports.

Looks really great, Hunter. I have the 5D2 and I would agree with your assessments.

I've also done some 24p conversion tests in Compressor and find the results to be 'good enough' too. The interpolated frames work well enough in motion. The fact that you showed footage to 'camera guys' without giving them advance knowledge about the conversion and they didn't see anything wrong pretty much says it all.

It's certainly not for everyone, but the 5D2 has such a unique look and is just so low profile. Very easy to be as discreet as needed.

Btw, if you're looking into recording audio separately (which I really hope you are), I just completed some initial tests with a Samson Zoom H4 solid state recorder and sync'd the recordings to slated takes on the 5D2. (which we also ran pass-through audio to via Beachtek)

Results? Fantastic and well worth the trouble. Easy to sync in FCP.

We recently shot some interviews for a commercial spot with the 5D2 and are very happy with the results. Here are a few grabs:

Here are few grabs from 5D2 video I shot goofin' around with my daughters the other day. I shot these with the Nikon 85mm F1.4

Good luck with the film!!

Wow Elton, grabs look great. They look much smoother and nicer than what I'd expect from a D90 video frame grab.

This 5D mk2 is getting really tempting.

I dunno, I'm not a junior member and I don't think I have negative feedback, but I too see jerky motion when playing back this clip that I do not see on other Vimeo clips. Does that make my observation more valid?

Yes, we will be recording sync sound separately, probably on a tascam HD-P2. Those grabs look really great, and its good to hear the audio synced well. About the jerkyness, the shutter was a little "tighter" than what 1/60th should look like, I think I may try out 1/50th and see how that compares. I would love to even see a PAL update for this camera though, the 25p-24p slow down would be a breeze.

Hunter, why wouldn't you try to get as close to 180 degree shutter simulation as possible? 1/48th a second is standard for digital, 1/50th is as close as you can get with the Mark II.

I would like to Andrew, its just that 1/50th was looking too "smeary" when I tried it- that was before 24p conversion though. My logic was that 1/60th shutter is 180 degrees at 30fps- but I still dont have the camera yet so I will of course try a lot more with the shutter when I get one.

Hey Hunter,

Nice looking footage. We do 35mm film transfers and could do a 1 minute film out test for you if you need one. I noticed some of the typical problems of a 30p to 24p conversion like ghosting from blended frames usually on pans or motion. These were pretty minor and it seems like Compressor did a decent job.

You might want to give Twixtor a shot if you have access to it. It may do a better job because you can use something other then frame blending.

If you want you could send us the raw 30p image and your 24p converted footage and I could take a look at it to see how well we think it would transfer. I could also see if I could process the 30p to 24p any better.

Best,
Andy

Many times junior members come in trying to start problems. I have noticed some vimeo files play better than others. but I've also noticed different PCs/Macs play the footage different as well. I figured maybe a slow connection. Jerkyness can esily be fixed with a plug in or lower shutter speed. The main issue I'm looking for is the quality of the final images.
