Pretty cool, especially for facilities.

Offers Convenience of P2 Card Content Offload and Copying to RAID Drives *

SECAUCUS, NJ (February 11, 2009) – Panasonic has introduced the AJ-HRW10 P2 Rapid Writer, a portable workflow tool that dramatically simplifies access to P2 content and incorporates the in-demand feature of RAID 1 mirroring support.

With slots for two 3.5-inch removable hard disk drives (HDDs) and a built-in AJ-PCD35 five-slot P2 memory drive, the P2 Rapid Writer can automatically transfer data from up to five P2 cards. With the touch of a button, it can copy material simultaneously to two separate RAID drives, putting this critical back-up function well within the grasp of even the least technical members of a production team.

The HRW10 features a 5-inch LCD screen with simple touch-screen operation. It provides clip preview (Play/Pause/FWD/REW) for confidence playback; clip sort and filter; P2 thumbnail display, P2 metadata display and editing. The P2 Rapid Writer supports the master quality AVC-Intra (100/50) and DVCPRO HD, DVCPRO50, DVCPRO and DV recording formats.

Other valuable features include a G-bit Ethernet port to move content rapidly across an IT network, and an internal speaker and headphone jack for audio playback. The P2 Rapid Writer requires 12V DC power. Battery operation is possible with a separate power supply.

The HRW10 P2 Rapid Writer will be available in April at a suggested list price of $9,995. Removable hard disk drives, power supply, rack enclosures and rack slides will be sold separately. Minimum disk drive specifications are two 3.5-inch drives, at least 7200 RPM speed or higher, with serial ATA-II connections.

Very Nice piece of gear, no doubt it will find a home in many top end facilities, I doubt it will see many purchased by the "Average P2 users".
Panasonic have shown they can build great products as this is, maybe it's time now they made some "Cut down" products in performance and price for the rest of us who use P2.

Very interesting! I've always thought Panasonic dropped the ball when it came to the data management portion of its workflow. Users were just left to piece together a multipart strategy for backing up data safely--ie, discover the importance of backing up in duplicate, find a hard drive solution (two hard drives or a RAID 1 enclosure? fixed drives or removable?), decide what kind of P2 card reader to get (single card? P2 Gear, 5 card reader?), what copying software (Shotput? Finder? Explorer?), etc. etc. etc.

Some users are totally comfortable researching all this and then putting it all together, but a ton of people felt overwhelmed by it all. I've attended a lot of P2 seminars in LA over the last couple of years, and always saw attendees' eyes glaze over when the Panasonic reps started to go over all the different permutations.

This product simplifies things. Obviously, it's not affordable for some people, but a production company interested in P2 will definitely find this worthwhile, especially if it's truly pretty foolproof.

I still think Panasonic needs to communicate better about long-term archiving (ie, LTO drives and the like) but this a great step forward.

I wonder that file system it uses?

Check out the "1 Beyond Wrangler". It does more for less $$. Transfers P2 cards from 4 card slots simultaneously to 2 hard drives with optional LTO -- all built-in. Easy-to-use custom software.
And the company has more P2 workflow products in their product-line: the Wrangler Reader will hold 4 of the hard drive cartridges and connect via eSATA to your computer.

Yea, the Wrangler rocks! We picked it up as soon as we saw it. We are finishing up a demo video of it so that everyone can see how fast it is. If you have more queations about it we are working really closely with 1 Beyond to develope new features on it.

Here is a demo video that we just put together really quickly for the wrangler.

We are waiting on the new Wrangler portable to come in the office. It is half the size, half the weight and runs on two hot-swappable batteries. Very exciting!
