Moving from HVX200 to EX1

Well guys after 1 year of stuggling with th costs of P2 media, I've decide to make the switch to the EX1. It's not that I don't like the HVX200, it's just that for every shoot I need to budget for more P2 cards. I haven't sat down and figured it out, but I do believe that the P2 media is more expensive that 16 mm film was.

Now that a feature job has popped-up I cannot justify $12,000-to 20,000 in P2 card costs.

Any tips you guys can give me on shooting with the EX1 and using the cards?
Is the 16gig the best deal?

Thanks in Advance!

I think you need to explain your workflow to us re using p2 cards..

if you are shooting drama then you should have no problems using p2 cards as long as you have a good workflow going..

Im not trying to stop you from buying an Ex1, i own both sony and panny and they both have their uses, i just think you need to rethink your workflow

Work flow is simple. Travelling/shooting with little or no time for backing up or dumping footage to hard drives. I'm switching to EX1 for cheaper media costs.

Thanks

of course it's only my oppinion,
better image, cheaper media
16Gb of 35Mb/s, true 1920x1080 for $100 - unbeatable

damn.. now I know this thread is going for at least 5 pages on that comment right there, point is that this subject has really been beaten to death

Because shooting AVCintra will solve all your problems. [/sarcasm filter off]

Sounds like you need to either go back to shooting tape or heavily invest in SDHC cards and MxR adapters for an EX kit.

Mostly I used 8GB SDHC cards because they're easy to back up to DL-DVDs on my laptop. I have a few 16GB cards and I really only use those for local or weekend shoots. Of course, a handful of SxS cards for overcranking.
I mainly shoot corporate and scripted drama. I carry one Pelican SD card case with 8 8GB SDHC cards, another one with 8x16GB SDHCs, plus two tall soft Expresscard size cases, one with 6x16GB SxSs and one with 3x8GB SxS and 3x KxS adaptors in them. Never run short yet, but maybe I shoot less than you do.
HTH
Cheers
Chris

$20,000 in P2 costs?

I just finished up two weeks in Africa, we shot on two 32GB cards, plus occasionally on a second camera with a 16GB card. Most, if not all the footage, shot at 1080/60i, 1080/24P, or 720/60p, so 100mbps for almost everything.

Offloading footage takes no time. Plug the card in a laptop, use P2 Forge and it'll automatically recognize that you inserted a card, start the transfer, verify it, and then format the card. It happens in the background, you'd never even know it was happening.

I wasn't a fan of them which is why I bought the hvx's. I'll wait before I make any judgments.
