America the Beautiful

hahahaha...how do we know its not platinum? i can just see that guy now mumbling to the girls after he's just lied to them about who he is "damn fans always trying to take my photo....it's irritating"

Darryl, this thread is very inspirational and I hope to hear more from you and your story. I've watched the interviews you posted, and checked out the articles, everything sounds great. I love hearing stuff like this. Keep it comin'!

Hey Darryl and everyone,

What sort of price can you expect to sell a hour long television documentary to US television. Im sure there's a sliding scale depending on who you sell it to. I'm looking for a ballpark figure.

We're in post on our doc.

You can make more $ sharing in the advertising revenue with the broadcaster if you make the right deal. It's a license deal and you still own your content, big money long term if the public likes it. Our tv revenue here in the US of A is about 1/20th of what you can make world wide. Can be big money. No sliding scales in selling one product.

Hey roberts321, I mentioned your film in class today. One of the student had heard about it.

Roberts321,

Awesome thread. I'm mad that I'm just now finding it. but sometimes you get information when you need it. I'm finishing up a Feature right now, African-American Comedy. So I'm really interested in everything I can read up about Distribution Strategies. I'd seen the poster I know for your movie, somewhere - can't remember now. But congrats on all of your achievements and can't wait to hear more.

Also would love a PM with some "real names" especially some of the companies. If you can spare it. :)

Hello everyone,

Thanks for the posts. I'm in the middle of a 82 city in 100 days tour, so I haven't checked the threads in awhile. I'l have some updates for you soon. We played at the market at the Berlin Film Festival a couple of weeks ago and we have interest from, a USA TV station, 9 countries for "all rights," deals, a domestic network interested in doing a 13 week series and a major publisher for a book deal.

If I'm able to pull half of this off it will be great because normally these channels are for films that were blockbusters at the theater. This would mean that all of you could create large "grass roots," audiences for your film and then sell the ancillary markets just like a studio would.

This would be the pinnacle of independent filmmaking. I want to stress again that marketing is the key to getting the audience. And since all films need to be marketed differently, there's a lot of room to be creative.

The branded entertainment that I dealt with 3 years ago is no longer in business, but there a tons of them out there.

Also I will be in Toronto in May. You have to come out.

I promise to check the threads more often. Hope all of you are well.

Hey Chip, cool picture of Paris Hilton. Did you talk some sense into her or were you not there?

Hey, Darryl, why didn't you sell the rights to the 9 countries? Were the offers made in terms of deposits or was it just general interest? Because interest doesn't amount to much in the foreign market (no disrespect intended), I just want to ascertain your strategy in not jumping on those deals.

If you have interest from a major studio or distributor, of course they want all the rights and if you have sold even one territory they won't buy your film. So when you have a chance tell us what's going on.

As for the TV network deal, you should grab that as well, especially if it represents a number in the millions. You have spent about a million on this movie and you're putting all this time and effort into it, so you must want to make a few million over your budget, I'm assuming.

Keep us appraised of this real valuable movie and its potential. You're definitely exploring some uncharted territory with this movie.

Also if time permits, write about your impressions of the Berlin market. I've never attended it and I'd like to attend it next year perhaps. Thanks...
