SGPro Blade Review

Thank you for the world's first SGPRO Blade production unit test !!! really appreciated all the effort and energy put forth to this.

I know its a hard question phill but out of all the letus adapters what would you say it was on par with ? extreme ? or not..

Also id like to see how it performs in lower light, indoors maybe.. altho im scared to see, that was outdoors albeit in london but still the image wasnt as clean as the shots at the end without the adapter on.

also kudos on sticking the camera in peoples face's and not getting into any bother, we can be shooting over the road about 100 meters away and wed still attract the strangest of people.

Really hard to answer, mainly because of above points. Only used it for 2 hours! But on this evidence it has more features than Extreme. The main one being ability to stop down which I feel is very important. Shallow DOF is not want "film look" is all about. You need to be able to control it properly and stopping down is key to this.

But the Extreme is a reliable beast and has served me very very well for 18 months. With the back focus adjustment/ Elite fix it is a superb adaptor and is a perfect match for the EX1/ EX3 with perfect edge to edge sharpness...

Things have become much more complicated now for people buying adaptors!!

I always stick my camera in peoples' faces!!

Which shots at the end without the adaptor on? Everything was with adaptor on.

Ah the last couple of establishing shot's looked very clean and everything looked in focus, hard to tell seen as you were getting your time lapse on =]

You are welcome. I hope it is helpful to people who are thinking of upgrading, starting out or whatever. It's always good for someone to buy something first and try it out before you jump in!!

Please bare in mind, this is with an EX1, not an HV20...

Looking forward to seeing the footage, Phil.

Phil

Is the CA the normal for the ex1 at that z72 or is the adaptor adding its own.
I use the ex1 and ex3 and that is a concern

Thanks for the posting and reviews they are always enlightening

Chuck

Those shots were slightly softer as they had slow shutter 16 on, but yes everything was in focus as it was the 17mm on the camera.

I thought everything looked really crisp and "filmic" in the edit. Of course I wanted to grade but was told I couldn't. I hope people realise this is a first. I never put my work out there without tweaking it!

I have detail off as well, so that coupled with the adaptor means yes the image will be softer than the standard ex1/3 without an adpator with normal pp settings...

Chromic aberration..No idea to be honest. Can you see any in the video at all or was it just on the stills?

By the way thanks to everyone in this thread. It's been a fun 24 hours doing this! You have forced me to work very quickly though. Lots of pressure :-)

haha i thought it was, i had to reopen it and watch it all again, i thought did phill think that it had a dof to it,

shame your not gonna be round on the wed at earls court would of been good to meet you,

anyway off to bed, glad you had fun phill.

so glad i stayed in to watch this nice one phil some awesome shots especially with the person in the anorak hiding his/her face lol. Even though im a newbie, i really liked how the blade performed. Be interesting to know how the Razor 2 does but im guessing this will be producing similar results as to the sgpro

Thanks for taking the time to shoot and report back, Phillip. Interesting and informative read. Those wondering might have an easier time pulling the trigger now.

Great job, Philip. Thanks. People have been waiting for this very moment since the Blade was announced. This footage helps a lot. Nice shots, btw.

there is chromatic aberration in the footage too. you need to see the video in HD, in full screen to see it. these crops from the footage shows the chromatic aberration, the green/blue and yellow/red fringing in the contrast objects:

Even before seeing these crops, I could see it on the Exposure Room HD version. Hmmm....

Man, finally!!! I had to take off for the afternoon but finally got back to check out the short... Well, of course you can sit back and really nitpick but overall, I think the images Phil captured were very, very nice. Sure there was some CA but only if you concentrate and specifically look for it.

Although I haven't had the opportunity to work with the Ultimate at all, I'm not convinced from all that I've seen and read that it merits three times the cost of the SGBlade... Between the SGBlade and the updated RR M2, we've now got some pretty cost-efficient alternatives to the Ultimate for those of us that can't quite justify the jump in price.

Phil, thanks so much for being so generous with your time and sharing your experiences with one of the first production units of the SGBlade with the rest of the world. For those of us with SGBlades on their way, I think you've reinforced that we've invested in one of the best that the 35mm adapter technology has to currently offer to date.

Woo hoo, I'm excited!! I will be filming a filmfest entry with my 'Blade' over few months and really looking forward to using it...

I do have to ask, how will the wides be addressed? If you can't use wide lenses, for the most part, it's a major cripple. Even using a vistavision frame size may not compensate for it.

Will this be something that can be fixed with a ground glass switch?

As well, what about the abberations?

I think the pretty packaging made me super interested. LOL. I must say, great job at packaging the new adapter. It looks really nice.
