Michael Phelps could have made me $1 Millon

I'm not sure about that.

After all, now you can point out to your audience that you can be a record-holding-Olympic-gold-medalist, a world-class athlete with fame and money and respect showered upon you...

...but just let an image get out of you maybe smoking something that might be marijuana, and bye-bye endorsements, bye-bye respectability, bye-bye status.

See, kids? Drugs are bad for you because if people find out what you're doing on your own time, no matter how beloved you are, no matter how relatively harmless the vice, you'll be ruined.

If anything, Phelps may have just made your work easier.

Hmm. While I have spent time on this thread defending marijuana as being less harmful than things such as alcohol and hard drugs, I have to say clearly I do not think children and teenagers should be allowed to consume it. They do not possess the maturity to use it responsibly, many adults don't, and studies HAVE shown that it can stunt physical and mental development.

If an athlete or celebrity smoking pot at a party is the deciding factor for a kid choosing to smoke, then that kids is going to do it anway! Let's get real.

You can say "this person isn't helping" all you want, but the reality is that placing any blame on Michael Phelps is completely misguided.

I didn't mean to suggest that marijuana - or any other narcotic - is okay for kids. I don't believe for a moment, that they are.

I'm probably the most anti drug guy around. In my 35 years I haven't touched a drug (caffeine or alcohol excepted, lol!). Still, I'm appalled at the media hypocrisy - everyone bashing this kid as if they haven't done it.....

Lotta' people throwing rocks from glass houses, methinks!

Michael Phelps is one of the most dedicated people on the planet and did it every day for years to be able to represent his country and himself in winning 14 gold medals.
How many of the media are this focused and determined in or about anything they do. Or for that matter how about us. Are we willing to give every day what it took him to be the champion he is. Most of us whine at a lot less than he has had to give over the years to become great at what he does.

I don't support drug use and have a son that is addicted to chaos and the drug use that goes with it. I love my son and hope the best for him because he is now an adult. I have seen and been exposed to street life and know the bull*&*&* when I hear it. But Michael Phelps is a young man that has topped all who has come before him in his field. He has personally paid the price to get to the top and now because of one incident has lost a very lucrative endorsement and has paid the price for a unfortunate incident that went public. I'm sure that someone that has never put forth the effort that he has wanted their moment of fame or money to sell this photo. I don't think that what he did in this one moment in his personal life should define what he has achieved over the years.

It's his personal life and he did not do anything that more than one president has admitted to. I don't see tearing down those on top as a constructive exercise for reporters but then again most of them will never achieve what Michael has. I believe the kid will learn from his experience and go on and add to his great achievements in life. But he has a right to be a young man and to not have to be perfect all of the time. After all this was a college party and if we judge all college students this way none of them would measure up.

I don't condone drug use and would caution him to be more discreet in public and in is choise of ways to relax, but I also can forgive him for being human.

The sherif announced tonight that he will not be arresting Phelps due to lack of evidence. Guess he tried to get the other people at the party to roll over on him and they would not.

It in no way is illegal to pose with a bong. Their waisting resources by even messing with this is egg on their face that we as tax payers can not afford. Go fight some crime or get off the clock.
As for athletes who like to sprak it up after a long hard day, that's their business. Weed is not exactly "performance enhancing" unless you are a video editor. lol
If you can get your ass kicked by a stoned guy, you should prolly up your game.

Phelps is still acting as a role model even in the midst of this. He was using a bong and filtering some of the impurities out. The kids need to learn it somewhere.
