Ok, so I am a little confused about this.. Like the Sony Ex3, and z7u , the lens is removable..

Does this mean there is no need for a 35mm adapter like redrock to achieve shallow DOF? is it possible to put other shallow DOF lens on the camera ?

Thanks.

You will need an adapter, just like any other camera. The difference is that with an interchangeable-lens camera you can use a specific special-purpose relay lens, instead of the built-in lens. That could theoretically offer cleaner/sharper images. But, the downside is, manufacturers will have to specially manufacture such a relay lens and that may or may not happen any time soon.

Bigg BIG question is how much better can you get between EX-1's lens and an external Relay lens on the EX-3?

I hope someone does this comparison!

As I understand it, unless you need specific feature offer by the EX3 camera, as far as resolution goes, there is no difference between EX1 and EX3.

Although Letus and others may make a relay adpater for it. So although you'll still need a 35mm adapter you may end up not needing a bulky setup.

No there is no difference in resolution. The only real differences are the shape, viewfinder, removable lens and the frame rate adjustment now being a button on the unit itself, instead of software based.

Ergonomically it's much better too, I'm struggling to get used to holding the EX1. It's my major gripe. Second is having to enter the menu's to under/over crank. On the EX3 you don't need to.

It's a bit hard to access those features with software based but I can still access them, however. One of the biggest complaints I have about the EX1 is the grip. I see that the EX3 has this grip modified to be more ergonomically tuned.

An EX3 with relay lens would be a much better solution than any sort of on-the-lens 35mm devices. These things are not only expensive, but
- reduce light
- often give you vignetting
- turns pic upside down (which can be corrected with flipped image in EX3, but you have to flip the clips in the post, which is a hassle)
- but the most horrible thing is fiddling with these devices, which is incredibly annoying and in situations when you don't have the time to do the proper adjustments, you may miss your shot

Now imagine the "brave new world" of a relay lens finally out. It means you attach that piece of device to the EX3 with ONE CLICK. Then the bloody thing will finally REMAIN there, while you can replace the lens - you can go with your favorite EF 70-200 L USM then if you enter a tight place just switch to your wide angle 16-24 L and so on. With a half circle you have to do with your wrist.

Add that the Letus Ultimate is just out for 4500 USD... WTF! What were they thinking? I buy the EX3 for 8000 something then pay half of that price for a piece of glass attached to a fan drive in a plastic box??? Those guys went crazy...

EX3 owners or owner wannabe-s: wait for relay lens, THAT will be the solution.
I am not a relay lens maker, just an impatient videographer who wants to get the obvious - which Canon gave us decades ago already (by the XL series)

Hallo Canon, what are you doing now? Sleeping? Sony is taking your own lunch away... Waky waky.

Like Barry said...That may be a very very long wait... Or not happen at all! For me, the best bet is still the EX1 with a Letus Extreme. It's here now... and affordable.

Hunter,

Do you have the web site for P+S Technik? I would love to get a pro35 adpater for my EX3. I am new at this. Thanks

Lester

Maybe somebody here can help??? I heard from some DP friend that the Redrock M2 adapter didn't work with the HDV Z7 because of its autofocus macro, but does the R3 Sgpro , letus or another DOF system work with the Z7? I didnt have the system ( M2 + Z7) in my hands yet, I will test that next week. Somebody Knows if there is a way to work with that configuration???
THANK YOU VERY MUCH
Simon Brauer.

hi Simon,
the new "M2 Encore" is working with all cams, including Z7.

Lester: I don't know if it's a problem for you, but the pro35 is about 18 000 dollars...

Letus now has there 2/3" relay lenses list on their site.

http://www.letusdirect.com/cart/letus-relay-lenses.html

With an ACM-21 adapter for the EX3 you could use this relay lens and the lens adapter. They have also said they will be creating a 1/2" version of the relay lens, which would work very well with the EX3 and hopefully be priced a little bit less.

I can't wait to check out this sytem.

Guys Thanks for the answers....
I will be doing some tests on monday , to see which avalible system works better wit Z7...

All the Letus and P + S Technik relay lenses are big BS. First of both of them are charging a HUGE premium for the relay lens alone and secondly you will STILL need to use their DOF adapters, another big cost factor. Only then can you attach your 35mm lenses.
And it makes absolutely no sense because JVC has a relay lens for their 1/3rd inch cameras which costs less than P+S Technik's or Letus' relay lens and you can DIRECTLY attach PL lenses (no DOF adapter needed!). I think companies like Letus are big rip offs and more than that what is the point spending more $ on adapters than the cost of an EX3???
If you have that much money you can go straight for a 2/3rd inch camera like HPX 500 which gives you nice shallow DOF.
My 2 cents :)

it's funny how far the misconception that interchangeable lenses=shallow DOF goes. i just had the president of a major sony dealer here in la try to tell me that using 1/2" digiprimes on an ex3 would give the same look and DOF as using a 35mm adapter. i got a little chuckle out of that one...
