Audio Recorder to accompany the D90

Hi Everyone,

First of all let me say that I'm a total noob to video. I'm just starting to record video with the D90 and trying to get a "feel" for amateur film making. I know the audio on the D90 sucks and I was looking for an inexpensive audio recorder (preferably under $150). I'm not looking for optimal audio quality... just something better than the mono on the D90.

I plan on documenting my hikes in Rocky Mountain region and wanted to capture audio clips of streams, birds, wind, waterfalls, etc. and add the sounds later on a video editing software.

I was wondering if something like this would be good enough:

I do want a little flexibility of attaching an external mic to an audio recorder but I'm not really sure what to look for as far as specs. I just want to "get my feet wet" into video and audio recording to see if I want to pursue it further. If someone can recommend a fairly decent audio recorder I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,
Ray

Check out the Roland Edirols

Check out the Roland Edirols

At $300 new, the Roland Edirol R-09HR is a bit out of your price range, but you might be able to score one for half as much on eBay.

I used the Edirol in last weekend in conjunction with my D90 while shooting a bike race. So far it's exceeded my needs.

The zoom looks like a possible option. Has anyone used a mic with it such as a mini MKE400. To be portable/solo you have to have a shotgun mike attached to the camera. So maybe a small shotgun mike with the zoom in your top pocket or attached to the camera. I even wondered if you could used a really small dictation type voice recorder attached to the MKE400. Its sounds dumb but really how good is the internal mics electronics, probably the size of a peanut at best!

Behold the Zoom H2 black version!

The h2's built in mics are fantastic. It's not as great with an external mic but i use mine with the mke400 all the time and it's definitely more than ok.

The "hot shoe" is actually the head from a cheap tripod for a laser pointer meassuring unit. I removed the legs and screwed the plastic cover under the head. Oh and I spraypainted it too, it was ugly silver like the H2 before my guaranty-killing paint job.

Nice. What a great idea. How has it been working out for you? Are there any noise/vibration issues due to the mic being so close to the Nikon body?

Well if you try to focus and other manual contro...oh wait, we don't have allot to fumble on that thing...so don't worry about that. I really hope it doesn't disfunction some day. I wonder what the customer support would say to the paint job heh.

Not really, it's meant for music and ambience. Get a shotgun for dialogue, or an omni if you can get it close enough.

I just got the D90 and i was trying to take video with sound but all i get for the audio is a static sound. I tried the two button reset and made sure my finger was not on the microphone. I also made sure i put sound ON in the movie settings. Does anyone know what i'm doing wrong or what i can do to get it to work?
