Using home HDTVs as a monitor?

Probably a stupid question.
Is it possible to look at video from the 500 on a home TV? I mean the big LCD/plasma screen TVs. I'd love to look at some of the HD video I've shot that way. My monitor at work pretty much sucks, and there's no budget for a better one.
I'm not sure how to get the video out. There's a component cable, with a single attachment end. Are there splitter cables that can allow it to be plugged into a RGB on a TV?

If you are an APPLE user....... apple TV is a way to go. I edit my HPX-500 HD footage on FCP convert it to APPLE TV codec and I have my HD footage on my HD big screen.
A relatively cheap solution. Plus you can record the HD projects to the APPLE TV hard drive and take it on the road.

if your talking about a monitor during the shoot, that would be a pain to carry around, I use a 19" though and it works well. As for editing, most LCD/Plasmas have a VGA or DVI cable, just span your mac to that.

Vanvideo, are you just talking about attaching the HPX directly to an HDTV? Just use the component cable that came with the camera (connection is the back far right looking from the back of the camera) and plug the red, green, blue into the HD component connection on the TV. Switch the TV input to component 1 or 2 etc.. and put the Camera in playback mode making sure you have the format set to the same as what was recorded. You can also point the camera at yourself in record mode and see yourself on TV.

Ducati, that was it, thank you. I bought my 500 used, and I didn't even notice the cable in the box.
The cable's connection to the camera is loose. Is this normal?

Yes, loose it is on both the HVX and HPX. I wish it had a screw on connector but then again sometimes I don't. It never seems to come off, but I have lost connection because of the looseness.

Glad I could help. Aswering questions here is like working on a car. Sometimes you have to make sure there's gas in the tank and air in the tires...

You'll love the new camera. Have fun!

The AJA HI5 makes a very useful HD-SDI to HDMI box thats often installed in post facilities.

The HI5 allows us to take long HD-SDI runs from the editing systems or machine rooms and hook up to the HDMI input on the consumers monitors that are used for the producers and lobbies.

Could be useful if you don't like working with the component break out cable and a DA.
