Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 ?

Thank you Dan!
The Tibet report is the one which made me buy the D90.

I see you are only shooting with the Canon now.
Since you have much experience with both cameras would you recommend switching to the Canon?. (for professional video shooting purposes only).

P.S-loved your Africa story, very well done!!!

Johnnie

I decided to go with the Tokina 11-16mm over the Tokina 12-24mm.....For one the 16-24 Range I wont miss as much as I already have a 18-105 lens....

Next, I wont be using it for any zoom and the 2.8 is a bonus for me because I do alot of my shooting in low light....but still hav the option for great outdoor shots with the SUPER WIDE 11mm...

Now they both are KILLER lenses and I was torn for almost 2 weeks....But I dont think you can't go wrong with either one...they both rock

how will this lens (Tokina 11-16mm) work with Nikon FX cameras at say around 11mm?

i have a d90, but sort of thinking a bit towards the future... say d400 or smth like that comes out and its FX

will it then do smth like this?
11-D3R_4295.jpg

or this doesnt apply to video?

Yes, that might be very acurate. I will have to get rid of all my lenses, if I ever get a camera with full sized 35mm sesor. Are the d400 models generaly FX sized? It would kill me if the next nikon with better dmovie mode would be FX...AAHHH!

Well, according to the REDUser boards, the Tokina is somewhat acceptable at 15mm and ideal at 16mm on full frame sensors. So, even though you lose the 11mm to, possibly, 15mm range, you would still have a 16mm f/2.8 prime no matter what. In that sense, you're pretty safe with the Tokina. If you need to go wider on full frame, you're looking at either the Nikon 14mm f/2.8 prime or the Nikon 14mm-24mm f/2.8 zoom.

Yeah the RED guys are head over heels for the lens, nothing but great things to say about it.

I don't even see the issue at 11mm. Our RED Nikon kit includes the Tokina 11-16 and I've used it a few times at 11mm. S'fine to me. Then again I can't seem to remember if we were shooting 4K HD or not. Hm

Oh yeah, forgot about that. On the RED One, the 11-16mm range is usable. It's just that the worry is that once the Scarlet FF35 and Epic FF35 models are released, the Tokina will then become compromised. As it stands the only reason to worry about losing the 11-15mm range is:

1. A FX-sized Nikon D-movie camera is released (ie. The rumored D400, D700x, etc.)
2. The Scarlet FF35 and Epic FF35 models are released.
3. You want to use the Tokina 11-16 on a 5D Mark II.

All of those options are full frame camera choices. As it stands now, the S35 size sensor on the RED One and certain Scarlet and Epic models will be fine with the Tokina all the way through the zoom range, hence why everyone is so excited about it. Either way, you can't lose by investing in the Tokina 11-16 as, again, you will always have a 16mm f/2.8 lens out of it.

It's all about the crop factor. I think DX ist 1,5. That's the factor one has to aply when calculating the focal range. But speaking of which, why would anyone use a 11mm lens on a FF sensor? That's overkill isn't it? The Tokina is made for the cropped sensors, which have the strength in telephoto but are weak in wide angle. The Red One has the same size of sensor, hence the hype for the Tokina. But as soon as they release the FF sensors, why bother with the Tokina? OK it's great for that price.

this lens is almost "too sharp" at times its unreal...its exactly as sharp as my Tamron 90mm 2.8 macro

As I understand it even with a full frame still 35mm size sensor this Tokina is supposed to work at 16mm, which would give you a sick FOV.

This lens in the Canon flavor would be so sweet with the new M2 using with the Canon Smart mount and the camera zoomed to a S35 size on the GG. Like it was pointed out you would get to go all the way to 11mm without an issue which is f'ing wide... real sweet stuff...

I have nikon 17-35 2.8 and was looking into this tokina and selling nikon. Now not sure with fx future.

Are there going to be any fx limitations with:
Nikon 35 mm 1.4
50mm 1.2
85mm 1.4
?

no.
nikon primes work on fx down to 15~16 mm. And most of them have manual aperture.

I think is a good idea to buy fx lenses, just in case

Beware that this tokina is hard to get

so all nikon FX lenses will work perfectly on FF35 epic and scarlet? no cropping, nothing? any catch in using them on FF35?
