Batman goes Nutzoid!

working on the Oscars reel, i'm seeing all kinds of behind the scenes on Aliens because Stan Winston died last year. and *MAN* Cameron is a D-I-C-K-H-E-A-D to people. belitting crewmembers left and right. everyone has a story about JC's...er, lack of patience with them.

Thats pretty interesting.

On the Abyss Documentary they talk about a scene where Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio walks off set cause she is so fed up with Cameron.

I guess being a truck driver turned director doesn't instill a lot of patience..hah

Check out the Aliens Special Edition documentaries. Supposedly, the British crew at Pinewood Studios didn't like that a young non-British director was taking the helm of the sequel to a Ridley Scott picture. They questioned a lot of his decisions and made it difficult for Cameron to get what he needed. Not that I'm saying Cameron wasn't at fault in some ways too. There was also a bit of culture clash that added to it as well. Interesting behind-the-scenes stuff though.

The Abyss doc is good too. That sounds like the worst film shoot in history.

As for this whole thing with Bale, and to lighten the mood a bit, I am reminded of a funny Hitchcock quote from the book Hitchcock/Truffaut (page 189):

"... but Ingrid Bergman got angry with me one evening because of those long shots. And, since I never loose my temper and I hate arguments, I walked out of the room while her back was turned to me. I went home, and later on someone called to inform me that she hadn't noticed my departure and was still complaining twenty minutes after I'd gone."

I just became aware of Bale's outburst today, and then saw this thread as well. He had a right to be angry, but he just wouldn't let it drop & totally took it way too far, in my opinion. Granted, always two sides to a story, and there's the fact that this is just one portion (audio only) of what happened as a complete picture, but in it's current state it paints a very ugly picture for Bale.

Well goodmorning Norm,

I totally agree with you.
I sure hope this movies kicks ass, because the third one was very dissapointing.

The more I listen to the clip the less of a big deal I think it is. Just going from the clip it sounds like the DP had repeatedly been a distraction during filming and this latest incident was just the straw that broke the camel's back. I mean, there's only so many times you can screw up before you make someone flip their lid. Bale's rant, which never really got person and was basically about mutual respect and being professionalism, seemed to die down after a minute or two but then I think the DP tried to explain/justify himself again and that set Bale off a second time.

Let the people who have never, ever lost their cool continue to cast their stones.

Actually, it was only the second time. Bale says so in the clip himself.
"This is the second time"
And since most people tend to exaggerate.... it could have been the first.
Just saying. :)

Of course damage control is in full swing so we'll here all sorts of things now.

WOW! 188 post in 2 days? I gotta read this, just wanted to chim in regarding James Cameron, there's no argument he is a great director as far as him dealing with people... it seems like the dificult directors usually bang out some amazing stuff, I've also heard Kubric being difficult to, so there must be a method to their madness... not saying treating people like Sh*t is cool, but a director has to know what he wants and sometimes that pisses alot of poeple off.

As for Bale flippin out on the DP, I wasn't there so don't know what to think.

Kubrick wasn't abusive toward people, he would just do a million takes to the point that actors wanted to kill him. I had a friend who was working on miniatures for Cameron, and witnessed him yelling up at one of the gaffers, "I AM JAMES FUC*ING CAMERON, WHO THE F*CK ARE YOU!!!" . But, you can be nice and do amazing stuff. Spielberg has a great rep for treating people well, so it's not a pre-requisite that you be a screaming a-hole. And being a screaming a-hole doesn't mean you're a great director. On AICN, Stallone told a story about Danny Cannon who was directing Judge Dredd. At one point, for no reason, Cannon jumped down from the crane and screamed, "FEAR ME! FEAR ME! EVRYONE HERE SHOULD FEAR ME!!!!". The movie still sucked.

Or it could have been the second time while just trying to get that scene and something that was on going throughout the whole shoot. It could have been a lot of things but of none us know because we weren't there.

Personally I'd rather give the guy the benefit of the doubt than brand him an @sshole because of short audio clip on the internet that has no context.

Personally I would never treat another professional like that, period.
Now, maybe if the guy was banging my wife. :D

Doesn't really matter, we just don't agree.

Cheers,

Mike

I dunno. I spent several days working in pretty close quarters with Jim Cameron, and have no complaints.

Maybe I was lucky and he was having a good week.

Thing is that with something like Batutta's friend hearing Cameron say what he said is on quite a different level than what Bale did. Bale went on for way too long and was really belittling to the DP. I would probably be pissed too if the DP was futzing with the lights during the take, which does beg the question of who does this? I don't understand the concept of tweaking the lights in the middle of a take unless it is for a special lighting effect. The bottom line is that a 3.5 minute tirade is just not appropriate. You don't swat a fly with a rocket launcher. It's a waste of ammo.

Personally though, I still want to see both Terminator Salvation and Avatar, regardless of Christian Bale's or James Cameron's antics on set. The sad thing is that the media will try to use this to pull Christian Bale down, and possibly stall his career a bit. Same thing that happened with Tom Cruise's couch jumping on Oprah. I think it sucks that our current society seems to think it is okay to judge someone and jeopardize an entire career on one silly incident that in the long run doesn't really matter all that much. Because let's face it, everyone has had a tantrum and gotten worked up over something and blown it out of proportion.

Of course Bale should've been smarter about this too. I mean for goodness sakes he's on a movie set, not in the kitchen of a restaurant or some other everyday work environment. With the mics, cameras, behind-the-scenes video people, and all the other on-set witnesses, he is just asking for trouble by throwing a tantrum.
