Feb 2: Owned My 1st EX1 for a Year - DIY Firmware Upgrade Time

Well now that my first EX1 is out of warranty, being a year in my possession (more or less, not counting the two trips to Sony for repairs and one exchange of a DOA camera at B&H), I am strongly considering updating the firmware.

However, I heard that it makes some changes to the audio section. I would like to know exactly what those changes are, and that they don't have a negative impact on the audio performance of the camera, as I rely heavily on it for a new range of low-budget music performance videos that I've been shooting for small ensembles.

The only info I've heard was a vague reference to the attenuators being adjustable in 6dB steps instead of 3dB steps which, to me, sounds like a disadvantage.

What exactly changes about the audio?

PS: Rumor has it the auto focus improved as well. Is this confirmed with objective testing?

I have been told by Sony that 2 printed circuit boards are being replaced, along with the back panel.
Battery drain is fixed along with other things.

I don't know of any specific audio enhancements per se but when I sent my camera in under Sony Premium Support cover (which is free for 3 years in Europe) to fix the battery drainage problem I was told two circuit boards had been replaced.

Of course the camera came back more broken than it went in - with no audio recording capability. So it went back again and the explanation for the lack of any audio recording capability was a "defective circuit board" so I guess in theory the audio could be different on the "new" circuit boards vs the originally installed one.

I'm using 1.11.
I'm not having an issue with the audio, so I can't help you there.

But, one thing that was obvious for myself was that the focus peaking was more sensitive.
No objective testing, but the AF sure seems to lock on quicker.

no one, including sony, seems to have a precise answer on the audio alteration. i wish there was some on earth that knew exactly what is "fixed" regarding audio.

Surely someone here has had the camera before and after the upgrade and can spot the differences in the audio menu. ;-)
