The final decision ex1 or 5d mkii

exactly . by the way when I said "high end professional looking video" I actually meant the video image out of the camera. believe me I don't care what the camera looks like. I have a little mutant hv 30 I used sometimes for pick up shots.

here's the thing 7 grand barely gets a functioning ex1 even with the card hack trick. Plus I would really like a shoulder mount.

While with the 5d I could get on camera lights, follow focus, shoulder mount, and everything my little heart needs to make me comfortable.

I just have to say have go to vimeo and search the 5d it's very hard to find a clip that is not gorgeous, and looks like it's straight from Hollywood, while from the ex1 with or with out a letus there are plenty of shot that arn't exactly pretty.

5D is a great choice. You will enjoy it. As far as running the nikon glass. I dont believe there is one adapter backed by anyone. It also renders all controls through the camera useless. I would run canon glass becuase you dont wanna fug it up. that being said. i could be wrong. read this on normanrockwell.com

That would be in photo mode. Yeah come to think of it that is a little lame :(. No auto focus, no IS, it would have pretty limited still use, but hey that's not why I am looking at it.

Are you saying that the EX1 can't achieve a similar or better image than that in daylight? Have you ever shot with one?

Honestly, Andrew, it sounds like you've made up your mind to buy the 5D over the EX1. I don't know why you're on this forum arguing with people who are trying to give you advice. If you like the look of the 5D and you have the justification of being able to buy other gear to go along with it, then by all means, get it. You're a big boy and you don't need us to tell you what to buy.

Before I bought my EX1, I asked Philip Bloom what he thought of the cam since he has shot a ton of stuff with it. He said it was great especially with the Letus. I didn't turn around and argue with him that it had rolling shutter, cheap paint, etc. Doing so would be insulting to him. Discrediting the camera he makes a living off of would be insulting his skill and judgment. I took his advice because I respected it and I made a decision.

If you think the 5D produces a better image than the EX1 plus it's cheaper and allows you to buy other stuff, then nothing we ever say in this forum will convince you otherwise. Go buy the camera and make sure you shoot mind-blowing stuff that would be so incredible that it wouldn't matter if it was shot on a camera phone.

don't listen to these guys telling you to get canon glass, they don't get what you're trying to do (either that or i don't)

it's simple:

if you stick a lens with an aperture dial on a 5D mark 2, what happens.... OOOOOOO manual control over aperture, funny that isn't it? i hate all this complaining over lack of manual control when such an obvious solution is at hand. that and the fact that you have total control over WB it doesn't seem so bad, although shutter is important too....

beachtek are coming out with a product that might interest you if you get the 5D, it's an XLR adapter with phantom power, level meters, headphone output and level controls designed specifically for the 5d mark2

nikon lens will be a pain, i'd suggest getting an old M42 lens, they have the same flange distance as canon EOS, can be had pretty cheap and lots of people make adapters for them. they're all 100% manual focus of course.

i'm trying to decide between the two cameras myself actually, all the 5D footage looks so amazing. but something tells me that after the initial wow factor wares off, i might get sick of its limitations. the EX1 is a far deeper camera and i imagine some time spent with it would allow you to create footage which expresses your own asthetic integrity in a more individual way. perhaps the reason why the footage from the 5D looks so marvelous is because it contains aspects unattainable by low cost production for so long, but when these aspects become available to everyone and are overused...what then?
even though i say that i don't really believe it, i think i'm just rambling....

does anyone care to make a guess at how many stops the 5D mk2 has over the EX1 in low light?

After some thought, I just realized what Andrew is trying to do. You really WANT to buy a 5D and are trying to find people to agree with you so you can feel better about the purchase. Well, you're in the wrong forum. Go to the 5D forum and you'll get your "ra-ra" quite painlessly and you wouldn't have to defend the camera's limitations.

If I wanted to buy an EX1, I wouldn't go to the HVX forum and try to find agreement. I would just end up in arguments with people who love the HVX. Make sense?

This may have been mentioned, but for all of those who are concerned about rolling shutter artifacts such as skew, the 5D and especially the D90 are worse than the EX.

If you have not checked this out yourself, you're in for a surprise.

I think this whole thing is much more subtle

Both are great cameras each has a different forte and strong point

Each will be better for certain types of work

too long to go into here

the main advantage of the Ex1 is full manual control meaning consistency between shots is possible

the main advantage of the 5d is the (IMO) ergonomic superiority compared to a letus and EX1

A bare EX1 is probably superior to the 5d - if you dont hate the look of the small chip camera (which I do)

Umm why would you go with a Nikon lens on a Canon body? The Canon EF 24mm-70mm f2.8 is a pretty sweet short zoom at least equal to the Nikon.

Also it is not possibly to put a canon lens on a nikon not unless there is some adapter I do not know about.

That's really easy,
get both for a day, shoot , compare all aspects, do the pilot, leave the "cool" factor aside, make up your mind,
I'd go with EX :)

Sorry Andrew, I have to agree with Menchifus. I think you've already made up you mind. You're not really asking for advice from this forum and you're just trying to bring the pot to a boil here with this debate.

Also it is not possibly to put a canon lens on a nikon not unless there is some adapter I do not know about.

because the nikon mount sits further from the film plane than the canon mount nik to can is possible - other way round is not if infinity focus is to be kept
