The final decision ex1 or 5d mkii

So were a small company and have a project coming up. We will need one camera and not much else. It will be a daily one minute segment on a local station. The segment would consist the host out and about in the city explaining something.

So with about 7 grand for a camera we immediately thought ex1, buuut the 5d looks so sweet. The audio would be one wireless mic going into the cam.
So it's either a simple ex1 setup or a fully tricked out 5d mkii. So what would you guys do in position.

say if I did go 5d it would include the following:

5d mkii body

Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8 manual aperture. $1,500 I think this is an ideal lens. they shot Bourne Identity with it.

either redrock shoulder mount( wich is pretty cheap) or this ST-7 http://www.expandore.com/product/add/Ad ... upport.htm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-oHuLYg59g I like cause I power lights and such off of it.

A hoodman eye piece and some gaffers tape.

A matte box, love redrock's but I think I would go with a clip on as not to smash through filters when filming. maybe just love that big box though.

some filters or screw-ons depends on the mattebox.

I'd like a z-light with the adjustable color temperature. Maybe

already have mics, so what do you guys think about audio. Beachtek also sells a little amp that allows you to get a headphone jack from the rca's on the 5d. Also what about that idea to send tone to right channel to keep the agc stable?

Any other lens anybody thinks I would need?

What about speed. which one would edit and render faster xdcam ex or 5d?

I would appreciate any help, we have a week to decide and right now everybody (except me) is a bit wary of the 5d and would prefer the ex1. So would yo go for it and pray for firmware.

I'd take the ex-1 over the 5d anyday UNLESS you are going to be shooting alot in the city at night, for the night stuff the 5d would look better. Day stuff ex-1.

alright looking for a "high end " looking camera ( not sure that means crystal clear or filmic dof) 7 grand is going to only get a bare ex1. If proper use for filters and manual aperture lenses do still think the ex1 would look better than the 5d?

dust off your couch and go sit for a bit. The cameras that will follow the 5D and the D90 will blow the current ones away. If this is the route you are going to take wait. If not go ex1.

wise words, but what if I want my mini panavision camera noooow :crybaby:.

I just keep thinking that the 5d will will fool everyone into thinking that we have a big budget and shoot film, thus making the segment more "High End" or trustworthy, I'dono.

Maybe we can hold of until after NAB. maybe, but it will defiantly make us sweat.

Huh? It sounds like the primary reason you're getting the equipment is for recording video. If that is the case, NO ONE in the world will ever say the 5D's video holds a candle up to the EX1 video. I don't care if it's day or night. The 5D is a still camera with video. The EX1 is a video camera.

I assume if you're recording in various situations and locations that you'd need manual control over your cam, right? Then the EX1 is the ONLY choice.

Note: There is one reason you'd choose the 5D over the EX1. If you'll be "stealing" shots in certain locations where an EX1 would attract too much attention, then you want the 5D.

I myself have a Sony EX1 and a Nikon D90. I use one or the other depending on where I'm shooting.

But if you're shooting for a local station, then I'd assume you'll have a press pass and wouldn't have to steal shots. In that case, go with the EX1.

well I guess I'll be saving up for a letus then, or an sgprr , or an m2 encore. AWW man not the whole "which adapter thing" :zombie_smiley:agian !!! I thought we already went over this. Now I want the ex3 and a b4 relay and ziess lenses. You see why the 5d looks like a magic unicorn that makes it all go away.

Shhh..... don't worry scarlet will be heerree sooon..... she'll be here sooon ...soooon .

What in the heck do you need an adaptor for? Back off the subject, open the iris, zoom in, and shoot. It will look all the world like a 35mm adapter except it's FREE. If you'll be shooting for broadcast, how are you planning to capture that 60i with the Canon?

And what are the audio inputs on that Canon?

What format will you be handing the TV station? RAW Canon files, XDCam files or doing FTP/Press based uploads?

Sounds more like you want the camera you like than than the camera you need.

The director isn't going for the "news" look which the ex1 has pretty much down.

I've been running a lot of 1/2 cameras lately so I know what the dof on them is like. And it's manageable, but it isn't mind blowingly gorgeous.

Final output is SD to dvcam. we do 24, 30 p .i whatever we want.

Sound either a wireless mic plugged right into the camera, or a sound plugged into the camera

Who came up with this "The camera looks more professional" garbage........

I've read it several times on this forum.... That's total insecure BS.... If that's all you got going for yourself..... Stick a fork in you..... Your done.

You should be thinking about content and execution instead of how your camera is looking. You should be the one getting respect from your clients because of your talents.

Have you ever heard anyone say "That guy is good because he has an awesome looking camera"?

frisco

I´d really wait for NAB if you guys can.
I can totally understand why you´re interested in the 5D, I like its look and the smaller DOF you can achieve with it, gives you the same WOW! feeling, all the 35mm adapter users here are longing for...
BUT as for handling I´d go with a true videocam any day! Hell, compared to shouldermount cams, even the handling of our beloved "handlecams" can be a PITA sometimes...

Wait for NAB if you can wait 6 months more after NAB to get the camera. Otherwise get it now.

If you want a filmic look, and you've only got $7k, and you're only delivering SD for broadcast, maybe you should consider a DVX100B with a DOF adapter.

Also, don't overlook the audio portion - which is half of the experience.. I don't think the audio on the 5D is that good. If you go down that route, you'd probably have to record audio to a separate recorder, then sync it in post. Why bother? Get a video camera.

Who came up with this "The camera looks more professional" garbage........

Same idiot who thinks a ex-1 looks better at night...

I'll bet he owns one, I have one too and the 5d smokes it at night. :Drogar-Smoke(DBG)::Drogar-Smoke(DBG)::Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

I'd never use the 5d for anything other than shooting a city at night. Vincent L understood this and used it to the max to promo the 5d.

A lot of 5d bashing

I think it is a fantastic camera - it cant be described as 'just a DSLR with video' the whole technology world has moved on

What I would say is IMO it whips an EX1 with a letus

The naked EX1 is very flexible though with ND filters built in and manual controls

Im lucky enough to be using both BTW - so not biased

Both is the dream ticket for many reasons

basically tele/sticks- EX1 - wides - 5d

Buy a naked Ex1, dont buy rails and all that garbage and then you have enough money for a 5d an a couple of short fast primes - nearly

So I guess Andrew should buy the 5d and do all his shooting at night... Riiiiiight!
Frank...an extremely happy EX1 owner.

Unless this guy can afford high speed primes for the 5D, he won't get quite as good an image as Vincent L or any other Canon sponsored guys. If you also look at the behind the scenes of Vincent's Reverie, he lit the heck out of those scenes. With all the limitations of the 5D, why would you buy it if you need a videocam?

Think about it this way, this guy needs a cargo van for his business but he really wants a Ducati. Sure, you can load up the Ducati with a box in the back but why would you do that? Get the piece of equipment that's built for what you need it for. In a couple of years, the HDSLRs will be in a better position to compete. But definitely not right now.

Btw, I'm not bashing the 5D at all. In fact, I own a D90 and I love where these two industries are headed - towards each other. I'd love to be able to carry just one piece of small equipment for everything I need. Right now, I'm favoring the D90 over the EX1 just because I've been stopped by security a couple of times for shooting with the EX1 without a permit. Now, I look just like a tourist.

Also, don't wait for NAB. NAB is in April and it will be a few months before whatever gear that is announced comes out. By the time that gear comes out, it will be NAB again and maybe you should wait for that one again. Just get what you need now to make a living and upgrade when the time comes.

Primes 20 and 50 are cheap as chips

LaFloret used a torch and a couple of lite panels and a modeling light

?

Many reasons not to love the 5d but those are not them

5d mkii body

Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8 manual aperture. $1,500 I think this is an ideal lens. they shot Bourne Identity with it.

Umm why would you go with a Nikon lens on a Canon body? The Canon EF 24mm-70mm f2.8 is a pretty sweet short zoom at least equal to the Nikon.

EX-1 is totally revolutionary... but so is the 5Dmk2.

If u want that hi-end film-look forget the 5Dmk2 because it ALMOST ALWAYS has the slow-shutter/360 degree aka collateral video stinky look. Its not the 30P I repeat - its not 30P which video-izes the look.

Take it from me I bought one - did extensive testing and at best u MIGHT get a decent film shutter look SOMETIMES if u lucky.

EX-1 Letus Extreme combo is still the bomb boasting 60P recording, brilliant chroma sampling for keying, FULL manual control, no moireing/aliasing on wide shots (Oh another reason 5D sucks cos who wants to blur their wide-shots?... thats actually where u need the detail!)

Just my tried and tested 2 cents :)
