D90's fast Motordrive for motion + Twixtor

This weekend I bought the d90 remote release and tried out the fast 4.5 fps motordrive on the camera. I shot 2K jpegs at fine quality, then brought it all into AE, and applied the Re:Vision Twixtor plugin to fill in all the missing frames.

Had an interesting effect on motion, when the subject is slow-moving, with fast motion it gets pretty teared up. An interesting surreal effect.

But I must say that in AE, doing a grade on the d90 jpegs, is such a treat compared to attempting to grade d90 AVI footage. And the sharpness of a 2k jpeg is a joy to behold.

So I made this wee short as a test:

Fantastic. There you go, if the D90 put out that image quality then you could say is a great motion film camera. Lets hope we can get something like that from future versions. Great work.

nice. Now would it be possible to mod the D90 sort of like the Andromeda? Imagine getting that quality and rez. We wouldn't need Red, then again we still would have to deal with the jello, no iso control, etc. Anyway, just a thought.

Nice one Matt.

You really know how to come up with creative cinematic workaround with these little cameras limitations.

Hey that was very well done.

How did you manage to use indoor lighting without any strobing showing up?
I've seen this with other indoor timelapses done with kinoflos.

My work involves shooting hotel interiors, and would now like to do video as well.
The D90's video is not sharp enough for this purpose, based on a few tests I've done.
I kind of gave up on considering timelapse for my purpose as I hadn't seen any good indoor timelapses, until now.

I would really like to know how you did it.
What kind of lights did you use?
What shutter speed did you set the camera at?
Were you moving intentionally slow?

Thanks!
Martin

Daylight and a 500W tungsten light...
My shutter speeds were all over the place.. usually around 1/60 to try and stop motion blur
Yeah, the only motions that really looked smooth were ones where I was moving super-slow. That way twixtor doesn't have to do some crazy jagged morph to blend two frames together..

any possible tutorials on how you did this?

The process was.. trigger the high speed continuous burst on the camera, do an action, and then usually the buffer would run dry in about 200 frames or so..
Then take the frames into AE, interpret the frame sequences as 4fps, then let twixtor so it's magic to re-time to 23.976 fps..

If you go to the re:vision plugin site there are lots of finer tutorials on what exactly twixtor does, etc.
