Best way to fit a Rode Mic to the HMC

Hi all,

Looking for some advice about the best way to attach a mic to my HMC-151E. I currently use an NTG-2 and I attach it directly to the mount on the camera. The diameter of the mic is a bit too small so I have wrapped tape around it to widen it so that the clamp holds it firmly.

However, I do suffer occasionally with handling noise.

I am thinking of getting either an NTG-1 or NTG-3 as I no longer need the option of battery power and the additional length of the NTG-2 makes it an awkward fit. Apparently the NTG-3 has lower handling noise, but it is about 3 times the cost!

I use my camera for weddings which are very hectic so I am not sure if getting a shock mount would be a good idea, as I would be worried about it getting damaged. How do other people get around this, do most people use a shock mount?

Would really appreciate any guidance.

Many thanks,

Stuart

I use the bracket 1 hd. It's a bit pricey but works well. I also attach my wireless receiver to it. There is and accessory called the over camera cold shoe which attaches to the bracket 1 and I use that for my Ntg-2 with shock mount.

This setup gets the shotgun microphone away from the camera which negates the camera noises. Expect to pay around $140. There used to be a similar mount on ebay for much cheaper. I can't recall the name of it at the moment. Maybe another member here can.
Here is the bracket 1 link.

I have the NTG-1 and it's too small for the stock mount. It will hold ok, but you're going to be suffering a bit of jiggle. I too thought about the shock mount just to help insure that I get clearer audio. And what good is the video for the wedding when the audio is bad?

I haven't got an HMC but use a DVX with an NTG-1

I got myself a Rode SM5 shockmount - it has two different sized ends (the small one is just a little larger than the NTG-1's diameter) - it'll fit into your camera mic mount with no issue and will position the mic away from the camera (lowering motor noise)
The distance also lets you use a "dead cat" or other wind jammer while keeping the fuzzy stuff out of the frame (the stock mount doesn't let you do this on the DVX)

Hmm, I'm beginning to think this might be the best solution.

No problems here with the stock mount and the NTG-2.

Same thing with the DVX. The mic is just a little bit bigger than my Audio Technica 835b. But I can close the stock mount with the right method.
