Red Ruination Blue - a production blog

It would be a mistake for anyone to intentionally screw me. I didn't have to make very much up when I wrote Corrado. I'd paint the walls with someone's brains, that's for sure.

Okay so my DP read the whole script. I know him well enough that I allow him to express his opinions beyond what a DP should, and for that I value the feedback.

Usually by the time a DP gets a script, his suggestions are limited to his profession - shots, lighting, camera equipment, etc.

In this case I leave the door wide open for plot suggestions, theme, new ideas, etc.

You all may think I'm not good at receiving criticism.....and I'm really not when it comes down to forum heckling, etc. But when you put a virgin script out there, you need to be all ears.

I hardly ever listen to a single suggestion given to me. You know why? If I only hear a complaint once it's usually just one guy's opinion. If I hear the same complaint numerous times, then I know something's wrong with the story.

So based on that, Dave had two problems:

1. He feels the story needs to have more of a back story to explain more of the events that occur:

Counterpoint: I intentionally left the explanation out for some of the events. I just felt it was better to have the audience accept the situation rather than require an explanation for it.

Example: Children of Men sets forth that humankind can no longer reproduce without going to great lengths to tell us why this happened. Explanation not needed.

So that was a stylistic thing.

2. He feels the story will be unsellable to A list talent because of the fact that it is so different from the way liberal Hollywood sees things.

I don't have an answer to this. If I can't make the movie 'cause no one wants to
be in such a story, then I won't water it down. I'll just make something else.

I don't think this is that serious of a consideration.....but we'll see.

There you have it.

"A-list" works for greenbacks like everyone else. (Except those that work for Euros I guess).

I'm excited. Lots of little things are coming together on this show. My presales connections are strong and getting stronger by the minute. Tell you what, this is what having a decent budget feature under your belt is all about.

Not only do people take your calls, they return them!!!!!

I have two interested presales people willing to talk. They don't have any of the details yet, but they are talking to me.

Excited!!!
