Filming at the airport/at gates/in the plane

Well this summer i'm taking a trip to poland with my family to see some extended family and i figured that i'd make a documentary kinda thing out of it. I would be leaving from toronto pearson international airport. Do you think anybody would give me problems because of the fact that i will be getting some footage of my family with the dvx100 inside the airport/at the gates/on the plane?

I haven't been to an airport in 15 years, and I live in America, but I'd venture to say yes, you might have some problems.

I would call the airport ahead of time and present the question to them, and even if they say yes, I'd still check with the front desk/security when you get there...explain what you're doing, show them the camera, get the OK from them WHILE YOU'RE THERE so that you know it's 100% OK...do this regardless of what anyone on this board tells you. Let them know it's a family vacation thing and just say it's home movies more or less.

You don't want to get into some silly misunderstanding and waste hours of your time.

One of my friends shot part of a short film at Toronto's airport a few years back. If I recall correctly, he called to secure permission and then had to have a security officer escort him around the airport. I forget how much he had to pay for the guard's presence, but I don't think it was too prohibitively expensive.

Good luck!

thanks for the advice guys.

I kinda figured it would be ok without permission because you always see it done on tv shows and stuff (amazing race, airline, and intervention just to name a few).

I'll ask at the airport.

actually...come to think of it, my friend's dad is the head of security for pearson. I'll ask him sometime. I completely forgot about this

I've shot similar ventures at airports. You may get hassled. It is illegal to shoot anyone working (flight attendants, etc), anything security involved (checkpoints), and anything mechanical (functions of the planes, etc), but it's not illegal to shoot family and friends in the airport.

With a bigger camera like the DVX, it wouldn't surprise me if you're told to put it away. Keep it low-key, and don't run around shooting everything in sight, and you may get away with it...

dvx100 in airports

dvx100 in airports

Post 9/11, Most airports are gonna have a problem with video if you don't clear it first.

But if its just a couple a quick shots ya need, you can strip the DVX down, remove the lens hood and just go for it.

course that's if you are adding vocals, sfx and score later. If you need dual system sound with dead cats & boom etc.... Brother, get some clearance.

good luck

well it would be just a few follow shots of my family and some front shots of when they're walking and stuff + some "holding the camera facing me as i talk" shots. Then some stuff on the plane but thats about it. No booms :P
