First piano footage with hmc ever?

Oh I should add this in also.. I used the scene file 3 that it comes with.. the scene "spark" thing. It seems like it acts like an in-camera contrast enhancer.

Then I brought the highlights up a bit and the mids and darks down a bit in final cut.
 
Hmmm... looks good... BUT...

What were your settings on this? I'm seeing some stair stepping here and there. Mostly at the line from the keys to the front of the piano.

Actually, the entire piece looks like it's been digitally sharpened just a tad too much.
 
nice looking stuff and sounds really nice and so well played. How did you light the background? Or key?

I think this screams for some slow dolly work, maybe 35mm adapter and some real camera manipulation..

ryan brown (lowercased) - 720/24p and I took in your advice about the stair stepping. I think vimeo shows it a lot more than the actual file. Regardless.. thats something I didn't pick up so I did some adjustments. Your criticism is appreciated thanks!

Justyn - He's actually backed up into a corner even though you can't tell in the video really. The walls are white so I just took a bunch of clamp lights along with the overhead lights in the ceiling and lit it really brightly so the light would bounce around the walls. I had 2 clamp lights facing the ceiling to bounce down, and one clamp light under the piano pointing at the wall facing the camera. A slow dolly would have been nice. Perhaps the next time!
 
nice work. looks fantastic. for a $3k camera that's a beautiful picture! actually i like the whole thing being in focus...the reflection off the piano is killer and when there's no reflection in the shot the specularity is hot. really nice work.
 
what's your bitrate on your vids? i'm having troubles streaming these in real time? maybe my connection is off today.
 
I don't really know much about bitrates but I've just been putting it really high so long as it stays within a reasonable file size. I put it at 3200.

Is there a good way to set your bitrate?

most broadband users won't be able to stream that in real time although you'd think vimeo would downsize that bitrate when they encode from your footage. For internet streaming i tend to not go over 600kbs sometimes i'll go up to 750kbs if i know the users who are going to be playing it. if it's for download i'll put it up much higher, but obviously that's not for streaming.

love the night shots. this camera is quite dynamic.
 
mike the sound is me turning the zoom real fast i wouldn't worry about it. lens is fine.

Retro - yes a tiny bit. it was sharpened a bit from using the scene file settings in camera
 
I made a few changes to tweak the video based on the very helpful suggestions and insights from this thread. I took the digital contrast down a bit, and book the bitrate way down. I'll repost in a bit.
 
The footage looks sharp Thomas. Very cool.

Have you tried shooting in 720p and either sharpening in-camera or post, then up-rezzing to 1080p?

I know the compression in 720p mode is better. Just wanted to know if you've tried it.
