D90 or D300?

Just looking for peoples opinions on this.

I'm looking at getting a 2nd body and will probably go for the D300 but the D90's video is intriguing anyway.

I already have a DVX100b and a 35mm adapter but clearly the D90 will have a lot less light loss and HD...

I have a bunch of nikon glass which is nice but i plan on getting a scarlet when they're released anyway and i do a lot of professional photography work so i'm thinking to get a camera for stills not for video in which case the D300 is probably the way to go.

thoughts?

Image quality will be exactly the same, so the real questions is if you need the horsepower and extra pro-sumer buttons/features the D300 has. Not knowing what is around the corner with scarlet, I would be leaning more towards the D90. Although, for the price of a D90 new you can just about find a D300 used.

Both rule, and I would not let the video function be a deciding factor.

i can get both at cost. $1300 for a D300 or $900 ish for a D90 i believe.

also i'm not a huge fan of SD cards mostly because I don't have any at the moment....

I am pretty sure they are they have the exact same sensor. So it really is up to buttons. I have played with the video mode on the d90 and I think it is absolute garbage, I can't stand it. The DOP is nice but practical uses... not for me.

The iso sensitivity on both are amazing. I would say go with the d90 and rock a grip.

I just had this debate with myself. Here's some of the info I gathered (I just googled D300 vs D90 and cut and pasted most of these points from DPreview for convenience):

The D300 has 51 AF points, 14-bit image processing on Raw files, 6 frames per second with built-in battery, weather sealed, Compact Flash UDMA support, you get the same sensor but casing is 1 grade down, size is 1 size down, focus is 1 gen older, AI/AIS lens support...

Plus I found a great deal on Microsoft's search engine, live.com and got 6% back! That sealed the deal for me.

Do you need to shoot action, like fashion, sports, etc.? If so, D300. If you can live with a more consumer body, then the D90 is a great camera.

Also, what's your 1st body? If you plan on using both bodies (for example one with a wide angle lens, the other telephoto), then button layout and wether they both use SD or CF cards can make a difference, among other things such as image quality differences.

if u plan on doing alot of pro work i would say definitely get the d300. the D90 is not exactly a pro body. Also if u look on the web there are a few comparisons. they have the same sensor but they don't interpet the sensor the same way so the image will look better from the d300. Also if u own the d300 for a while the d90 will feel like a toy. If u have alot of manual glass the d90 doesnt understand them and wont meter. (which really pissed me off) But u can get great results from both.

F100, I am going back to film.

The digital camera game is too expensive. I own a Canon SD-800is point and shoot, a Nikon D80 and a Nikon D300. Digital cameras are designed to become obsolete every year basically. New bodies are expensive and disposable because they are worthless after two years. Film looks better, tons more latitude, archives better and just feels better. I will still shoot sports and snapshots with digital but for travel and art photography, I have lived with digital since the D70, I am back to film.

Costco is less than $10.00 a roll including prints, negatives developed and high res scans to CD.

Used F100s abound for $249.00.

Or maybe I should sell you my D300? Very low miles.

I was just at my local Costco, I don't think that they do but it might be worthwhile to check online....

I don't think they do, it doesn't say on the website and I did not ask when I was there because I don't shoot medium format. This place is supposed to do good work on 120/220 slides http://www.calypsoinc.com/calypso/e6.php

thx dude :D

Go for the D90. Below is a link to Ken Rockwells website explaining why you shouldn't buy the D300 over a D90. This guy really knows his stuff.

I disagree with kenrockwell often. Sometime he reviews products he never had in his hands. From the tests on other sites, some of the info in his d90 review is false.

I trust.

Whether you like Ken Rockwell or not (he is a self-confessed bozo), if you hunt hard enough on his website, he says basically that he is an advanced amateur who just likes to rile people up.

But regardless, Ken does agree with my take on digital, that it is a ripoff, that it is super expensive and that film is far superior. On this, Ken and I see eye to eye http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/why-we-love-film.htm http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/real-raw.htm

Most of the cover shots you see on magazines, most of the best of National Geographic and most serious photographers who care about quality are still shooting medium and large format film.

Digital makes it so everyone makes crappier images overall because, "there is no film and its free to just snap away". You will notice on his front page, Ken recently acquired a Leica M7 instead of a Nikon D3X, because the Nikon D3X is a total ripoff at U.S. $8,000.00 and the Leica at less than half the price makes better images and will be current and up to date for decades whereas the D3X will be ready for the garbage bin in two years. I think I have bought my last DSLR, although I will still probably buy point and shoots for my wife and daughter. But for me, for most of what I want to shoot, film is it.

I have a D80 which I believe is pretty close in terms of functionality to the D90 (other than video) In manual mode, the D300 and D90 are pretty much the same camera. In daylight, the D80 does a great job with auto metering. In lowlight I pretty much can only shoot manual.

So it depends on how you shoot whether or not the extra money for the D300 is worth it.

I use both the d90 and the d300 and I'd say go with the d90. Really solid camera. I just took it on a trip to San Francisco and I'm really impressed with the results. I love the camera and the ability to shoot 24p is awesome also.
