Academy Award Nominaaa....yawn...

I'm actually pretty excited about the awards this year. I would have liked to seen The Wrestler get a best picture nom but everything else I'm ok with :).

although it was no masterpiece, i'm kinda sad Burn After Reading isn't on there for screenplay. Especially when Frozen River is.

Didn't Trainspotting end with a suitcase of money as its cleansing victory too?

Sort of. Although so much a victory, but a betrayal, as Renton's last-ditch effort to kick heroin, which he can't do as long as he still sees his friends (who convince him to try the heroin they sell).

Of all the Fincher films to pick best picture, they pick Benjamin Button. Unbelievable.

I'm so with you on this.

And I don't think this year is a yawn, actually its been an exciting year for movies, The Academy's picked for best film could have been a little better, but I thought last year was the most boring year of all for best films... I'm excited about this year.

i believe, and could be wrong, that only editors nominate editors and then the entire academy votes on a winner from those five.

Here's some info on how the voting process works. http://www.variety.com/awardcentral_article/VR1117998897.html?nav=news&categoryid=1982&cs=1

So, the message of this film seems to be that true love conquers all?

I wonder how true love saved the other people in the slums earlier in the film?

The films should be called From Tragedy to Predictable Candy.

It's just irritating when a film starts out by setting a tone for the film one way, then obliterates the rules
for an easy payoff.

No, the message is that everything will work out fine as long as it was pre-ordained by fate. So don't bother making any decisions in your life, or work hard at anything because, you know, you might get lucky and win a million dollars because every question in the game show directly relates to something you've experienced in your life. And girls you loved when you were five grow up to be hot supermodels that still love you 20 years later even though you've never, like, been on a date, or had sex, or even kissed...I think The Dark Knight has a more reailstic story.

On a side note, I don't quite understand how Slumdog Millionaire qualifies for best picture and not best foreign? I also don't understand how it gets nominated anyway. It was fun, I guess, but best picture? Slumdog Milliionaire is like City of God if it was made by network executives.

I'm not totally sure, but isn't the foreign section for other languages? if the film was in english it would directly go to the best film category?

well just guessing.

Yes, it's called Best Foreign Language Film...Films produced and funded in other countries have been nominated and won Best Picture before, such as Chariots of Fire.

Slumdog was the best film That I have seen this year, followed closely by TDK, Benjamin Button and The Wrestler. I thought the Dark Knight was great, but I was never into the Batman character even as a kid.

I have not seen all of the movies nominated so I really can't comment who I think should win.

For the record...Bolt Sucked.

Wall-E will win Animated Feature, but I hope it also takes home the Sound categories. It is probably the most complicated and difficult movie ever made. It'll probably take the song category too unless slumdog grabs it.

Really?...I thought it was okay...but compared to Wall-E it's Plan 9 From Outer Space. They shouldn't even bother opening the envelope on that award.

Funny...

I had a MUCH better time seeing Bolt than I did seeing Wall-E. Wall-E may be a "better movie" but it wasn't nearly as entertaining to me.

I saw The Reader, and it was completely vapid. The strange combination of being absolutely beautiful to look at, with refined actors whom I usually enjoy, yet the film was not good at all. Those are 2 hours I will never get back.

I have now seen all the best picture nominees. Milk and The Wrestler were both very good. Frost/Nixon was entertaining. StinkDog and then The Reader were the worst.

I was also underwhelmed by The Reader. Didn't understand the point of it, and thought Kate Winslet was miscast. She gave a great performance, but I think her star wattage and the force of her personality greatly overshadowed the boy and made the movie all about her. Instead, the lead character felt like a Supporting Actor in his own story. Perhaps if the kid gave a more interesting and charismatic performance the disparity wouldn't feel so great, but he was only serviceable. A more nondescript actress would have given the film more balance, but then perhaps it would be even more unremarkable.
