they're just SD cards in a raid array, no? wtf makes it so expensive? 16gb is like $1000....WHY? and it only hold like upto 1 hour of SD video...

Welcome to the forums!

You might want to give the search feature a look before you come in spouting off opinions that are likely to just get ignored. It's what's known as "trolling" and can lead to "flame wars". Sounds exciting, right? It isn't. If you do a little research I'm sure you'll understand why Panasonic prices the P2 cards the way they do, or maybe someone will be kind enough to shed a little light on it for you and save you the time and effort. In the future though, I'd recommend using the search feature before posting something others might view as "inflammatory".

Best of luck.

Well i'm not new to the forum, and I'm quite familiar with general forum rules.

BUT....i researched p2 cards and learned how they work and whatnot but I still don't see why they are so expensive.

You're not the first person to ask this question. There have been more than half a dozen threads debating this over and over, and most of them raised the same point as you. If you do a search I'm sure you'll find them.

And most of those threads went on way too long. We get it, non-pros and many pros think P2 cards cost too much. Move on.

D

Well i'm not debating the format. I think p2 is implemented really well and is pretty awesome, but the price is way too high for what you are getting.

no. in fact the price is NOT way to high "for what you are getting"
time saved in not having to capture tapes in real time - PAYS FOR A P2 CARD IN ONE or TWO USES.

this is a fuzzy analogy, but i look at P2 the same way i look at hiring a drywall contractor. is it more expensive than doing it myself? YES, could i do it myself? PROBABLY - BUT, it would take me a lot longer, i wouldnt do as good a job and the time and effort i save futzing with it will more than pay for itself in better uses of my time.

and thats the crux of my point. time is money. P2 saves me time. thus in my mind - PRICE JUSTIFIED.

THOUSANDS of RICH professionals disagree with you.
NO. thousands of LOGICAL professionals who recognize this is a business. and who's decisions are made based on time and profitability and not just desire/cool factor.

Here we go again.......
YEP! here we go. but at some point we have to drill it into these peoples heads.

if you want to run a trucking company - you have choices to make:
1. factor in GAS.
2. invent a new kind of fuel.
3. accept option 1. shut up, quit whining and get to work.

the video business is no different.

We all want the price of P2 cards to drop. There will never be any dissent except from someone who works for (or owns stock in) Panasonic. They know, we know, everybody knows the price is high. It's a barrier to entry for many.

Panasonic may be faltering as Sony is with Blu-ray, clinging to proprietary media and pricing in the face of an oncoming tidal wave of competition which in that case is online distribution, newer forms of media and piracy. If Panasonic sits on this pricing for too long, P2 sales will eventually fall to other solutions.

Obviously they want to amortize their expenses and make as much as they can while they can before the Next Big Thing washes P2 into its ultimately inevitable future as a historical footnote, just like the floppy diskette. Meanwhile its a great product at a price we all wish was lower, there really isn't much to add to previous discussions at this point... I for one have enjoyed the threads about this, it was a lively discussion about flogging a dead horse. Deadhorse overdue for burial... seems like a Sticky is in order along the lines of "We all wish the price of P2 was lower. Please refer to the following threads about this issue rather than belaboring the point... "

I don't get it - the 8 gb card was introduced at $2700. Now you can get a 32gb
card for about half that. Smaller cards fall in price each time a new one is introduced. A used 8 gig is now $300 (and it will perform as a new card) .
The cards ARE coming down in price.

Pro gear has always been and always will be more expensive them consumer.
Anyone who's ever bought a betacam deck or similar gear knows that. It is not
made in the same quantities as consumer, and is made to much higher specifications.

yeah, you want to talk extortionate prices - we can talk beta decks!
a boat anchor of a uvw1800 is still nearly $7000 and its nearly obsolete...
