Will B&H ramp up taxes and what not for delivery to UK?

Well, I was going to buy an HG10 from B&H and they have it listed as $499 or £335 which is about a 5 - 10 difference in conversion and then postage is about £50 - 60.

If I buy it, will they ship it for the UK prices or will I pay £499 + £60 postage?

My friend told me that because I'd be getting it imported for so cheap compared to UK shops retail price they'd just ramp up the TAX on it to make it match the USD price.

Help! I don't want to buy this thinking it's £335 and then end up spending £200 more!

I can't really speak for B&H but I really doubt they'd charge you any taxes as you're not buying it in person in New York State. That said, once it gets to the UK I'd be very surprised if you didn't owe some fairly hefty duty to the British gov't. That's the way it goes. But give them a call, I'm sure they can tell you the policy and what you can expect to be charged.

Um I think you would get about 15% added as stamp duty for consumer electronics/wee camcorders and then the current 15% VAT is added on top of all that.

I dont know much about international shipping, but I have purchased from them in the past within the U.S. In my experience they never charge tax due to the fact that they dont want to deal with trying to figure out every state's (or country in your case) individual taxes. They just expect you to file the purchases on your tax forms at the end of the year and pay that way. Now again, if there are extra fees tagged on for customs etc. that I dont know about but personally I have never paid ANY taxes to them during the transaction. When I bought my HVX from them last december, the camera was selling for $4995 and I paid $4995.

My experience is that the company doing the shipping will need to submit papers to your customs or government agency responsible for import when the goods reach the port of entry.
In my case in Canada, i am usually offered the option of having the shipping company's customs broker handle the paperwork for a fee and collect the taxes and duty owed from me or I can pick up documentation from the shipping company and do the paperwork and pay the duty and tax myself and return with validated documents to claim the goods. This was the case with the stuff I ordered from BH. In fact their particular "Class of Service" with UPS saved me the brokerage fee and all I paid was duty and tax.
