What is all this about "horsepower"

I know what longGOP is, and I know what goes into creating a GOP, and it's benefits and limitation and so forth, but I dont understand why it takes so much horsepower on the post side of things to edit Long Gop footage.

I know that you have to transcode to an I Frame format to edit long gop, and that the computer runs the i frame under the changed information and creates 15 discrete frames, or at least I think I'm right.

Why does this take so much power? Why are editors so scared of it?

It doesn't take much horse power to edit long GOP, I've been able to edit long GOP HDV in real time for years now, since Liquid 6 was released. THat was back with a Pentium IV 3GHz. Sure if you start doing too much the rendering can take a while (but thats because it is HD not because it is long GOP).

If you think MPG2 is demanding, wait until you try AVCHD and AVC Intra...

because it is more complex again than MPG2. The more complex these codecs get, the better quality they can achieve for a given bit rate but the more demanding the encoding and decoding gets.

How is it more complex?

The basic long GOP code decode process is the same right? where it overlays the changes info over the reference frame

there is much more than just an overlay comparison, there is motion prediction and a whole lot of things that go on in the encoding of the codec.

Just think of it this way, the more intelligence you put into the codec the more brain power it takes to process it. If you need more than that try wikipeadia and start researching the codecs (google is your friend), there is a lot of good information already out there.
