Closest to DV format and still good quality/compression?

Hey,
Right now I'm using a Sony VX2000 and once I rip off all my clips from my camera, they're in .avi DV format. What I'd like to know is what is the closest codec to DV format in terms of how smooth the video moves and quality wise with still decent compression. I noticed when I encoded to window video movie format, the frames per second almost looked worse than the DV format. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated :)

Depends greatly on your delivery once you know whether your delivering to; web (viral, youtube, yousendit, web based), SD broadcast, HD broadcast, DVD... or film print :), etc... you can experiment with different codecs and different compression rates. To get an answer to your question supply more info about you post pipe line.

It would be helpful to know what's wrong with the current codec so that we could recommend something you'd like.

Do you need it for a Mac? A .mov? Do you want something that makes smaller files? What?

Honestly, the DV codec is pretty darn good for what it needs to do.

What do you mean by post pipe line? I'd like this for my personal viewing, sharing with friends, and uploading to my website portfolio(No Streaming/just download) at a reasonable filesize.

Oh yes and I'd like to do some DVD authoring too with some of my edited footage.

DV codec does do good I agree. But the filesize is what gets me. I'd like to be able to share with friends through downloading.

For example, I have a variety show performance that is 4mins38secs at 992mbs. If I could get a compressed version that still has close to DV quality at like 200mbs or near that would be acceptable for me.

Keep the replies coming, really appreciate the quick feedback I'm already getting :):):):)

Well,

Mpeg4/avc is going to give you what you need. You could also use Microsoft's .wmv format. Both are very similar, both are smpte standards, and both work great for downloading on the internet. However, if you need a version of DVDs, then you need Mpeg2, as that is what get's written to every DVD for playback.

Take a look at this video on Vimeo that I encoded last year:
http://www.vimeo.com/886679

It's nearly 12 minutes long, and PAL SD (720x576) so larger than you'd be encoding. 12 minutes took 79 MB.

Here is a link to an .WMV HD encode (1280x720) that I did last year:
http://www.vimeo.com/1419305 It's 1 minute long and took ~25MB.

Download these videos and look at them on your computer. Don't try to look at them through Vimeo's high compression.

Is this the kind of quality you're looking for?

Finally, you can download this video: http://www.vimeo.com/2821010 . That's something I did this week at a 50MB per minute rate or so. And that's 720p HD. If you encode your DV files at a similar rate, they are barely going to look compressed.
