Getting a really 'dirty film' look.

Hey guys,
First post here and it's probably a fairly easy one.

I am looking for a plug-in or some kind of way to get a REALLY dirty film look.
I actually mean film as if it were physical 35mm (or other) film that had been stepped on, scatched, has dirt particles on it etc.

I know Vegas has an effect that lets you chose particles, scratches, hair etc but it's not dirty enough for me (:)).

Example: Robert Rodriguez' "Planet Terror" for the Grindhouse Doublefeature he done recently.

Any suggestions?

You can do it through compositing and so forth, but you might try multiple layers of the Film Effects FX, combined with other FX, first.

Well I have got some nice effects so far by doing that but I need large particles (if I zoom in on the default effects it's just blurry) and I need like a 16mm feel too.

becauase all plugins look canned and fake, I like to use real film scratch and grain.
You'll find it luma keys perfectly and then it's just a matter of adding "pops" and wobbles and a little bit of strobe.

I really would do that but like most here I have a next to none budget to be buying proper film and camera's to run it etc.

So I am stuck with editing in post to get the desired effect.

Grinner, I presume you're talking about real damaged film which has been digitised to an avi file, so that you can now simply add it as a luma key track to any project? Perhaps you could send GregPorter a DVD of files? :)

I have seen some such footage for sale from the stock video sites, but it's not cheap. Unless anyone knows of some cheap/free or public domain footage available online?

I wouldn't mind doing that and overlaying it on my footage.. but I can't seem to find any on public domain and stock archives. :(

I went on the internet archive and cut out empty sections of footage that just contained "dirt". masked it and threw it over my HD footage and it looks pretty good, even tho the source was SD.

That's funny because I actually done that recently with a film I seen it in and it looks fantastic, so I'm just going to keep finding videos with blank/white screens with the dirt on it, cut it and overlay it on my footage.

:)

Magic Bullet has the best film damage tools I saw so far.

I love MBL with all my heart but it doesn't produce the effects I want.. I mean, it has some killer effects I use on a regular basis but as far as film dirt and stuff it doesn't.

I also use NewBlue and that seems to be showing good signs of getting the effect but I want MORE. :P
