SGblade Beta Tester Reviews & Feedback’

Hi,

It will take between 5 - 10 minutes. It is not something we recommend doing 'on set' as you want to do this on a clean and well lit work surface.

Have ordered a blade. Will post a review here and on my blog as soon as I get it...

I think a new shootout is in order. Letus Ultimate vs Extreme vs Blade vs Brevis vs Cinemek (which I hope to get my hands on very soon)

Philip, that would be great! The testing of the sgblade seems to have been slow out the blocks up to this point

it might not be able to be done in one day as am not sure how long I will have the cinemek for and the blade looks like it is at least 7 weeks away minimum...

I guess I'll be the hv20 guinea pig, I just ordered one. I got both screens, which one will come installed?

If you ordered both screens, it will come with the RotoRazor 1 installed...

I'm going to be testing mine out with both screens using an HPX170 and an HV20 late Jan/early Feb if everything stays on schedule at SG central.

I think any shoot out will result in similar standings.

1st ultimate
2nd (blade/lex tossup)
3rd G35/m2

and really 2nd and 3rd place is somewhat arbitrary... I feel they will all perform similarly... the lex and blade will be a bit sharper with hazy bokeh. while the g35 and the m2 will have great bokeh with more light loss.......

I feel the Blade will have a few other important advantages over the LEX:

1) Ability to stop down further without grain
2) Ability to use higher shutter speeds
3) Interchangeable screens
4) Easier back focus adjustment
5) XY axis adjustment (with the flip module)

And hopefully, the Blade will have seriously robust internals for high reliability.

IMHO, this puts it closer to the Ultimate for about 1/3 the price. The image quality of one vs. the other will remain to be seen but I don't think they'll be worlds apart...

There'll be a few surprises involving new "unheardof" equipment hopefully.

For fun though, when the footage only portion is released. I'm not going to say which is which. Give everyone some time to speculate! Get people actually talking about the footage and not the "name" of the adapter and its reputation. Then I'll reupload new videos with properly annotated titles and all. It's going to be fun.

There's also going to be a variety of tests.

I know a moderator will probably say... "stay on topic"... so I'll refer you all to my thread http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=157373

But most importantly the Blade will be featured. Hopefully with multiple imaging elements!

welll the blade has a lot of thought put into it. its a well thought out piece of equipment and its conveniences are what I like about it most.... its image quality is great. sharp, almost as little lightloss as the lex/ultimate but sharpness on par with the lex with all the benefits of being able to stop down. plus backfocus, xy adjustment, and a reallly well thought out execution of all of thoes elements.

these things are what I find attractive about it. I will proudly shoot blade till the next incarnation of Shoot35 adapters reach the market....

Hi timur, not sure if I over looked in previous posts but did you get round to doing anything with the blade and posting it, as know you were one of the beta testers.

Hey all,

Next month, I will be shooting a 35mm depth-of-field adapter comparison test. This will be produced by my production company, IENCE. The goal is to shoot with the newest revisions of the M2, Extreme/Elite, Ultimate, Blade, Brevis, Cinemek G35, and a few others. Not to mention the original P&S Technik mini35 that inspired this entire industry.

The goal is to test light loss, resolution, edge-to-edge sharpness, workflow, and provide an overall comparison of these nifty little devices.

If you have any setup suggestions, test footage suggestions, basically any suggestions at all... please feel free to contact me via PM or email. Also if I'm forgetting an adapter that you'd like to see include, please contact me as well.

And be on the lookout for this test footage being released in February!

Regards,
Joseph Stunzi

the G35 is built well. Bokeh is unmatched, but static grain is an issue.

I think the Blade with the glass GG is a great mid point between the lightloss, filmlook, and sharpness battles. When i get the second Blade, (My first one was sent back for an upgrade) i will write up a big extravaganza of comparisons. I will test out a SGpro, Letus EX, Blade, try and get a brevis, and if i can find a G35 i'll throw that in there too...

Damn that's a lot of shoot outs, im glad that so many people are doing it. It's going to be so helpful for adapter investors to buy the best bang for their buck. BTW Thanks you three, i'm excited!

sounds like Joe's one is going to make the rest of the shootouts a bit redundant unless I can find an angle...How about I drink two bottles of tequila and see which one produces the best images and is easiest to set up whilst being paralytic?

Wayne and i discussed an experiment that he was going to try with my unit. it worked for about 2 minuted then it stopped being so "beneficial". IT was an attemp to make the adapter absolutly silent.

I sent it back to him. He is going to send it back with the normal build. Then i will shoot alot with it. and post footage for you all.

im gonna test it for my own purposes. and im looking for small nitpicky things that mot people dont even notice.....

Things like, can i take it apart real fast and put it back together in dim light... you know , realworld stuff... i dont care about res charts, resolution is only part of the whole dynamic of an image, and the usefulness of an adapter system....

Another example, can you get to every surface? on a recent music Video, a piece of dust got on the Flip module of a LEX. and it was on the internal part of the prism. I had to miracle it out of there by bascially burping the flip unit like a baby till the dust spec settled somewhere that wasnt visisble...

things liek that...

they are my babies... plus it sounds bad to be slapping your equipmet around to remove dust...

That sounds great and I would love it even further if you included some tests for 'real world' things like durability, reliability, robustness, etc... Particularly with regards to the internals; to look for and report on any corners that may have been cut to save costs that potentially may rear their ugly heads at the worst possible moments... In other words, anything that may be particularly prone to 'Murphy's Laws for 35mm adapters'...

Cheers and looking forward to your feedback!
