FilmFellas Series

I wanted to let everyone know that Zacuto has a new webisodic series out called FilmFellas that’s all about issues that relate to indie filmmakers. I think it’s pretty clever and the production rocks. Steve Weiss, the director, has some really interesting guests like Philip Bloom, Joe Swanberg and Susan Buice. This show is a Zacuto production but has nothing to do with Zacuto or any of products, it’s just filmmakers talking about what they have done and issues that are important to them.

One big theme I see in FilmFellas is how do I make money as an indie filmmaker, on the big screen, TV or the web? I was talking to Steve, who was a Director (mostly fashion and corporate work) for 20 years prior to starting Zacuto, and he’s told me how he’s been itching to get back into production, his first love, and this is his first endeavor. Steve and I are friends and we’ve been talking for the past year about how he believes the web is really where indie filmmakers should focus on creating an audience and ways to turn that audience into money.

Check it out, http://filmfellas.tv cast one, episode one was loaded up yesterday and a new episode comes every two weeks.

It would be great if there could actually be a breakthrough in income generation for indie filmmakers from the web.

I liked the quality of the video. Goodfellas is definitely a great Internet movie idea. It's very enjoyable for me as a filmmaker. I'd rather watch this kind of show more than any other show on TV.

Also the filmmakers sounded sincere and made some great points. But ultimately it remains to be seen if they can point to a feasible venue for making money on the Internet with movies produced specifically for the Internet audience. For me personally this is the only viable audience right now.

Making movies for festivals > find rep or sales agent > sell to distributor > get money ... is too far fetched.

As indie filmmakers we need a platform to show our movies and make a living from the screenings. Anything else is spinning our wheels.

This is just the first episode. I believe they're to be released weekly. So the conversation from this episode will be continued into the next.

You got it fellas, I guarantee to keep the focus on what the issues really are, making a living from entertainment. You notice I say entertainment and not movies. I think we should all be happy making and showing entertainment in any shape or form, get it watched and make a living doing it. From my point of view, I agree with filmman trying to be the one non Hollywood indie picture a year that ends up on the big screen is hard to do and not very profitable. We are going to have to start thinking so far outside of the box that we are in a different box. Because there are a million ways to skin this cat. And I’m going to start broaching these ideas in the coming episodes. I promise to get the best guests and ask them the tough questions. Any suggestions for guests to have or issues to talk about, I’m listening. By the way, webisodes come out every two weeks. Please subscribe. Foggetaboutit. Steve

This reminds me of Jon Favreau's "Dinner for Five" but for low budget indies. I would be great if you could get some known people and some of the unknowns together to mix it up. What I didn't like about DFF was it was too short. I could've watched an hour of filmmakers and actors discuss their experiences. And a lot of them were very funny and intelligent. Favreau had a lot of indie people on their including his boy Vince Vaughn. It was good stuff so I like this kind of thing and it's visually interesting as well. If you can make talking heads interesting then you've done something. And the speakers are very intelligent.

The settings of each part vary...Episode two is set in a hot tub (I need to point out I was wearing swimming shorts), episode three is the four of us standing at the urinals and episode 4 is us playing russian roulette (I know more Deer Hunter than Goodfellas). Not sure where the series goes from here...

One thing I need to point out...I went to Zacuto HQ and did I see any of the Zacuto babes as featured in their literature and videos? A big fat NOPE!!

My point exactly. When I was there doing the shootout all week... no hot babes. Especially the blonde with the HPX170 rig. No where could I find here. Even under Patrick Fee's desk!

No really though Zacuto has a great family vibe. I walked in the door and everyone said hello and got friendly smiles and replies back. I had met most of them at NAB 2008 and for the most part everyone remembered my face. My favorite part of Zacuto HQ is Jens's office. He has all sorts of prototypes in it. Steve's office has a really cool antique tube television as well. And not to mention all the antique cameras they have hanging on the wall. No hot model girls though. No dice my friends no dice!

just a little info... for anyone curious as to what surprises await over at Zacuto HQ in Chicago!

I know it's hard to believe but we are running a business and not a haram. Next time you come to Zacuto HG fellas we'll setup a photo shoot hire a model and get some fun shots with you and the model. Philip, we'll have you act as the AC and the model will be the DP and shooter. She'll have a riding crop and you cower as she gives you orders. How would you like that photo going viral.
