The real deal with the ex-1

I just watched this video on exposureroom:

I liked it. The only reason I was shocked was that the impression I get from this forum is that the ex-1 is only good for stationary shots. "Everyone" (whatever that means) says there are to many issues if you have to pan, move, breathe etc.

I didnt see any major breakdowns here. I really enjoyed the fullness of the colors and the dynamic movements. Can the HMC 150 match this.. or the HPX 170 for that the matter??? I am more than convinced despite feedback on the forum that the ex-1 is NOT just for filming while you sit in a lawn chair. You can be very mobile!

It's possible to do it for sure, but only when you turn the shutter off. Try to shoot some really fast shutter and see what happens.. and that kind of eliminates a lot of what I do.. That's kind of something that I love about HD.. the faster shutter stuff just makes things POP.. especially when shooting 60p. So sure you can do it, but you'll have to deal with a few compromises...

But it's a hellofan image.. For me the handheld side of the camera is a deal breaker.. Just hated shooting the little bit that I did.. Made the original XL1 seem well balanced and that was a beast.

I think that the EX-1 is an outstanding cam. No doubt about that.

That people even compare the HMC150 to the EX-1 speaks volumes about the quality of the HMC. That's good company to be in, I'd say.

Just get the one that best suites your requirements, and be happy.

I don't really get the impression that most people here look down on the EX-1.
Indeed most people say it's a good camera but I think when people say that the 150 is good or good for them or as good as the EX-1 or “I'd rather have 2 150's vs. 1 EX-1” some people go off the skids.

The rolling shutter issue is a real effect that is not going to be seen in every instance and it is something that anyone with a rolling shutter should be aware of.

They [the 150 and the EX-1] are BOTH good cameras so buy what you need/want and not what others are buying just because so and so said..... End of story.

Nikon vs Canon....
150 vs EX-1......

In the end it's what you do that really matters.

the rolling shutter issue can be a pain in the ass if you are matchmoving or doing other post stuff, it also might show problems in fast movement and it is terrible with flashes. (statement based in what I have read)

other than that you get a nice resolution, sharp camera 1/2 cmos camera, that cost 2 times the HMC150.

totally different cameras in different price ranges. The ex has its pros and its cons as the HMC has.

I am still considering an EX-1 but the flash handling and the problem with the blacks have given me pause.

It is a good value, but I can't really have a camera that excels in only 93% of recording situations.

As the last 7% seem to be where I am often filming.

That is why the HMC-150 has been a nice camera for me so far.
