Hi.

I am searching for a wide lens that will give me satisfactory results when shooting video.
The Tokina lens is highly recommended by pro and enthusiastic alike. (sharp, fast, and better priced then the Nikkor).

Is anybody using this lens and happy with the (sharp) video footage he is getting?.

Thanks.

Johnnie

I've used it mostly for stills but there's some video shots I took for my short and they look good.
Its a great glass if you can find it. I've had a hard time just looking to buy it (used of course - "never buy new" -my motto).
Its way more sturdy then the Nikkor and its my favorite other than the good ole f1.4 50mm.

As for "sharp" footage... D90 isn't really that sharp for HD video. It has that soft filmic grain look (that I love).
Canon is the camera for the eye popping "sharp" HD 1080 footage. So I really don't know what to tell ya.

same as poster said above me, the footage isn't sharp, if you want blindingly sharp footage, the Mark II is the way to go.

D90 sometimes has a harsh look to it, not saying clean footage isn't possible, it's just hard to achieve.

From the looks of it you already got the D90, so my advice might be useless. (I love D90 don't worry I'm not a canon fanatic).

Thank you HovelNaTurnip and BMFM FILMS.

I am currently using the D90 on some of my projects (http://vimeo.com/2380006) and acknowledge its "sharp look".
I hope the Tokina being a faster lens and hopefully being a bit sharper on the wide shots will allow me to produce better results.

I will appreciate if you can upload a short sequence filmed with the Tokina to vimeo so I can download it and compare it to my Nikkor 16-85.

Thanks again!
J.

Mr. Films or Mr. Turnip, is that Tokina 11-16mm by any chance an aspheric lens? If not, how would you characterize its barrel distortion at the shorter focal lengths?

Yeah, I read that before I posted here. Rockwell mentions the lens has at least one aspheric element, but he doesn't go into any detail. What I wonder is if any users of this Tokina zoom can report whether, at its widest angles, the 11-16mm is rectilinear, or shows some barrel distortion.

There is tons of info and pictures to look at at 11mm. Everyone seems to agree that it is a phenomenal lens for the price. Things like "must buy" seem to be repeated over and over by a hand full of Red One owners who already have it.

From the pictures I found it seems it is a phenomenal piece of glass for people building their own set of optics.

Well, that's downright neighborly of you, thank you. But you should spend time with your family instead.

Mainly I'm concerned with artificial verticals & horizontals—doorjambs, hallways, windows, etc—for moving-camera shots. I'd value seeing such things approached, on video, to get a feel for the lens's rendition of right-angles—how architectural lines change, at, say, 11mm, as they pass by the camera.

I'll have to rent some of these short zooms & see how they look. But thanks again.

Hey HovelNaTurnip.

30 sec. of any outdoor footage on 11mm will be much appreciated! (and as John wrote, not on the expense of spending time with the family :) ).

Thanks again.

Johnnie

Don't have a D90 but I love my Tokina 11-16 on my D300.
