Thinking of renting out my HVX...

But I'm not sure I'm ready to just hand it off to strangers, or even friends.

I'd like to rent myself out with it, which seems like a better deal (Camera + Camera Operator + No liability), but I get the feeling people won't pay for me to rent my camera unless they're the ones using it.

Does anyone have any experience renting themselves out with their HVX? Anyone have any advice for me?

the hvx is such a well-known rig, tying your services to it would limit your
rentals. requiring insurance is not uncommon ..

I won't let my cameras go out without me even if I end up offloading or working in another position on set. I've found it's a plus point rather than a minus, it's a good way to earn cash from your gear (better to be on set working than not)

I've also found that it's a great way of meeting new people and getting future work in the positions that you do want to work in. Go for it.

Renting out your gear on working the gig as AC or something is the best way to do it, and like it was already said its a good way to get future gigs.

Your thinking is back to front.

Which do you prefer...you to work most or the camera to work most?

You need to hire yourself out as a camera operator first and foremost and BTW...you happen to have a camera available for rent as well. That way you get work and the camera is an option.

Not ...I have a camera for rent and I happen to be "the camera operator" that you must use if you want the camera. You can lose on both fronts.

I'm a DP/operator who mostly uses cameras supplied by the production. I rarely use my HVX on shoots. I bought it mostly for personal projects.
But I do rent it out only if I'm in the camera dept., friends or insurance not withstanding.

And as others have said, it's a great way to network. I have picked up DP work that way.

i stopped loaning my gear (even to trusted friends) after two episodes where pieces of gear came back with unreported damage. there are just too many unseen little things that can happen that even the experienced borrower may not notice.

so it's my theory that unless you are set out to BE a rental entity and can do the volume and have backup gear to use/rent out when yours (and it WILL) gets damaged - not to lend out your gear.

"Almost" without exception, we don't rent any gear without us on location in some fashion. We at least send and charge for one of our PA's.
As mentioned, there are so many things that can go wrong, it isn't worth the hassle.
As always...JMHO.

Belin is my favorite Makeup person. Fun Gal!
We just did a gig with her and have another coming up soon.
PM me about how you know her so I can fill her in.
