FCP 6.0 and HVX/p2editing

I'm having trouble with my exporting on my p2hd stuff. I shoot in 720pn/24p and I capture via pog and transfer. I can't seem to find a way to export it without it getting all degraded and such. I've used export using quicktime conversion, settings best and just looks blah. Am i missing something? Also, I'd love to use compressor but I'm very new to it. Any help is appreciated.

Why are you using QT Conversion instead of QT/Current Settings? That exports as DVCProHD 720/24pn. Why would you want to convert that original footage to something else?

And when you do conversion, what are converting to?

the first question that needs to be answered is - what are you delivering on/for? DVD? WEB? This will make it easier to point you in the right direction:beer:

Compressor is far better to use than QT conversion. It is really a great, (and easy) tool to use.

But really, as David S. said. - output current settings. Then you have your flattened master. Quit FCP and drop the master in compressor and then answer Zack's question, and then pick whatever you want.

I shoot / edit / output 720 24pn, and 1080 24pa, both edited on a 23.98 timeline and wind up with whatever format I want, 23.98 for web / DVD, 29.97 for tape transfer.

Jack - just curious, wouldn't that take twice the time? and are you in a sense compressing it twice? Or, when you export 'current settings', is it uncompressed?

I ask b/c I've heard of that method- but never knew the benefit

thanks

Well with faster and faster machines maybe the benefit is dwindling.
But the main benefits as I see them were
- speed. Yes you output it once and then again, but the output from FCP is super quick, minutes or seconds for a 10 minute 1080 HD in pro res or DVCproHD. And then compressor works much faster when it's not running FCP and compressor. Maybe it does a cleaner job? Maybe not, but it can't hurt to have your whole processor doing this one major intensive thing.
- safety. Can you gaurantee that for ever and ever and ever you'll have your FCP project and all the media linked and ready to go? It's hard for me to retire hard drives like that for $ reasons. So having a flattened copy is a good idea.
- recompression? I'm not sure but I don't think so. You have the option to "recompress" everything or not when you output. I never check the recompress all, so I think it's just stringing together all the render files FCP is using to playback and ditching the other stuff.
- convenience - I need an HD H.264 for Vimeo - open the master go to compressor. I need a DVD for a festival - open the master go to compressor. I need a tape version for the festival - drag the master to a hard drive and take to a dub house. I need a tape version for a festival and I can only afford a crappy dub hous - open the master and go to compressor, make a 29.97 version and drag it to a hard drive. So if you have retired your hard drive with your FCP project you don't have to hook everything up again.

So not sure on the recompression issue, but I have eyeballed both, see no difference and this is way faster and more convenient.

Exporting QT/Current Settings doesn't compress the footage. It makes a digital copy of your sequence. And of course, nothing is uncompressed with DVCProHD.

Compression occurs in the cam

David,

I just don't want it to be gigs upon gigs you know? As far as what I'm exporting for, I am going to be using the clip for youtube as well as a hi-res, hopefully some sort of high definition digital release as well, so I'd love a copy that is as ristine as it can be. Thanks!

Again, you export QT current settings, self contained, audio and video and no recompression.

That file it dropped into Compressor where you can encode that file to all the delivery formats you want.

That export is as pristine as you can get. It becomes the source file for all the other encodes you wish.

I can't be any more clear on this. If you transcode, you losing something.

David,

Thanks for your help man! As far as exporting quicktime current settings, where is that? I have export>quicktime movie, using compressor, quicktime conversion. I don't see a current setting.
