New Web Series: The Dancing Bunnies

Thanks!

Yes most of it was the light coming through the windows. With a couple other lights to fill in the background.

That was really great!!! It looks fantastic too! Can't wait to see the rest of them.

I like the look you gave it. Was that incamera or color corrected in post?

I crushed the hell out of the blacks with one of the magic bullet settings... then i tweaked that slightly.

I'll try to post a before and after of what I did.

Wow, great stuff. Love the look.

What'd you use for audio?

Thanks for sharing, looking forward to more!

Robbie

Robbie thank you, We used Sennheiser G2 Lav Mics right into the camera.

Delaro, thank you too... the restaurant scene was a Tokina 80-200mm 2.8 and I was on the end of the lens for the shallow depth of field.

Can you give me a more in depth description on the audio. how did you set the mics up? Did you do any post work? What about ambience sound..I guess you just added in the restaurants noises after with some folly work.

Robbie

I'd like to know more about the audio in the restaurant scene. I'm impressed with the vocals. I thought perhaps you'd ADR'd it as the waitress sounded more live and weaker. The voices must have been put through some kinda EQ'ing? no? They are very sharp, I'm impressed. I just did a similar scene in a cafe and added folley etc, I used a sehn ECM77, which has to be about 8 years old now, got good results but nothing as crisp as yours.
tell us as much as you can about audio please :)

David and Robbie thank you. I had some issues with the audio so if you're digging it then that makes me feel gooooood.

They were wireless Lav mics. Each actor had one. The restaurant was completely silent expect for the actors talking. The restaurant ambience was added in later. It was just ambience from a sound CD. The track was called "Restaurant Ambience"

The wireless LAV mics are going right into the camera. No mixer. Because they were Lav's I was able to direct and do sound as well. :)

I cut the video on final cut and then when it was finished i had a few shots that needed some ADR. (some annoying audio scratches) So I brought the actor over to my place, put the LAv mic back on him, stuck him in a room behind my computer and then replayed the short snippets of audio he needed to recreate. I would hit record on my camera, I would replay the snippet of audio really loud so he could hear it through the walls.... he'd redo the lines the same way he heard them. I would have him to the line about 10 times so I had some options. I only ADR'd one actor. And it's only a couple lines. The waitress' lines are over modulated because I wasn't monitoring the sound when getting those shots. Yes I'm dumb. I tried to ADR her lines but they never matched. Oh well.

Then I would just import that audio onto the timeline to see if it fit the lips. One of the lines ADR'ed is "I'll take care of his too". And then he gives the waitress money.

Then exported an audio file that could be read by Pro Tools. I don't remember what it was but I can find out if you'd like me to. Took it down the street to a guy with pro tools, he had it for a couple days and did his sound engineer thing, and then I went in to watch it, suggested some tweaks, and then he burned the audio to CD for me.

I brought it back home and slapped it on the timeline. Exported it.

The pro tools session cost me $300. If I wasnt' directing and doing sound at the same time I could have gotten better sound and wouldn't have needed the pro tools session. Sound is so important and the Sennheiser G2's work great as long as you keep fresh batteries in them. But the Pro Tools session did bring the audio up to a better quality. Now that you're saying it's good I'm glad I did it.

Thanks again for the nice compliments.

Interseting. The reason why I asked is because I'm learning sound now and the sound quality in this was superb.

Sounded very movie-ish.

Robbie

Thanks Robbie.

I'm not a fan of boom mics because you get an inconsistent level and it's annoying when the mic drops into the shot and a few other reasons. Lav Mics seem to work for me, some people don't like them.

I think the music adds a little to the effect too.
